Anyone use z-poxy or another epoxy to harden spalted maple?

My question is, do you sand it back all the way to wood after it cures, similar to the process of grain filling? Does enough epoxy soak into the top of the wood to harden in sufficiently?

I've done two coats like that, and it feels harder, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to leave a film or thin coat over everything....but don't think I could get that nice and flat for a base coat of the final finish....

Thoughts?
