same as others for me with eq, but I run out of mine into a Morley ABY mixer, then to mobius> mx200> looper> amp to get stereo from mobius & after it... so my gain is no more than 10-11 oclock & my rear pad knob setting must be no higher than 9 o'clock or I clip.

EDIT: I go back & forth & usually run half mono now as it sounds better overall with more options/effects (in clarity/tone). In mono it's: guitar > soul food>DMBL (or switch those) >black rose octave>mobius>SMS>MX200 stereo out>stereo looper>H&K cf200 ss amp>ceramic cali & chicago

Front Volume 10:00-11:00
Bass off
Mid 10:00

The volume on the rear of the SMS I turn up all the way, then back it off just a little...maybe 2-5% .
Guitar volume I back off considerably, and MC40 volume like the rear of the SMS...almost all the way up.

For Jerry tones... treble 10, mids 5, bass 1 to off. The tone controls are really nice sounding in any position. For a Metheny-esque jazz tone, treble 6-7, mids 6-7, bass 3 works. All 3 set to noon sound good. I haven't found any position that doesn't sound good.

This is Brad's explanation of the output pad knob. I keep mine around 10-11 o'clock.

"Right next to the output jack on the rear of the preamp is the "pad" knob. By the nature of this preamp circuit, the output level can be extremely hot. This knob helps to pad down the output signal level to be more usable in most situations. Initially try your preamp with the front panel "Gain" knob set around noon to 1 o'clock. Then use the rear "pad" knob to adjust the final output level to best match your setup. You may find that the pad knob wants to be set down below noon, but feel free to set it wherever it needs to be. This will optimize the "gain structure" as well as minimize noise. "

I removed the rear pad (same as having it all the way up) and used the hole for a second output. 8)

Interesting. Would using two outputs at once compromise the pre amp in any way?

Not at all. It's just a parallel wired output. Same as using a "Y" cable only point to point in the SMS enclosure. :smile:

I know this is a "settings" thread but I didn't want to start a whole new thread just to ask this simple question: Does anyone know what the value is on the SMS for the bright switch capacitor? Thanks.

I have been liking a little bit of bass added in lately. Especially when I play in trio setting and using a single 12" JBL.

Lately I've been finding that under certain circumstances, like when playing really hot and pushing a power amp and speakers hard, the bright switch ON may be a more correct choice. At lower volumes when JBL's are less "pushed", they exhibit an extra crispness of their own so the bright isn't so helpful, can be too much. When JBL's are run loud, the warmer tone from the paper begins to dominate over the crispy sparkle of the dustcap, so bright ON seems to be the right choice.

You may notice that at really low bedroom volumes, the JBL's don't sound the same, you hear TONS of the metal dustcap relative to the paper. That balance between paper and metal dustcap changes quite a bit from quiet to loud.

I believe that the more we can do to really push the speakers to their limits (without blowing them) is part of the sound we all seek. Since that makes things really loud, maybe for some stages the right approach is just one JBL pushed hard. 3 JBL's pushed hard is gonna be loud, especially if it's an E120. D120F's or K120's are easier to push to that magic, musical-sounding edge. And Alnico is a bit sweeter sounding than the E's ceramic magnet. Brutally clean is NOT what we want. We want some subtle dirt, some amp and speaker stress, and we want it at the perfect stage volume. This is the mission and not an easy one at that. Once we attain that perfect amp and speaker stress/soft-clipping, then we're in a better place to determine how that bright switch is treating us.

It's gonna get loud no matter how you slice it.
