I am watching Rockford Files (James Garner TV show) and I swear they used a picture of Garcia as the "missing brother" in the episode!!!
It was that late 1970's era Jerry with the long ponytail like hair (beginning to gray) and a flanel plaid like shirt...he has his hands in his pockets. Ive seen the photo shoot pics before. I am hoping he will show up later in the episode playing the character!!!

No such luck...although I was busy and not watching too closely.

I heard he liked Close Encounters, but never heard he was in it.
A quick Google search suggests he was in the India scene, but is hard to pick out.
Maybe he is the very first person to run by the arriving car (waving arms) at the beginning?

OK, I just fell down a google hole trying to find this out... Sounds like BS to me but being a big fan of both I'd love to find out if it's true. Tried to find shooting dates for those scenes with no luck (hoping to cross reference with show dates). Maybe there's someone smarter out there who can debunk this? Or better yet confirm this???

I have also heard the C.E. extra info. Never seen him in it or had reliable confirmation. It made sense with them playing the theme around that time and his interest in movies.

I had always thought he was one of the sound guys holding the boom mic. Between 24 and 45 seconds in.

I really don't think the bearded guy in front is Garcia! Anything is possible with make-up and camera tricks though I guess
It clearly isn't a conspicuous appearance I guess. I imagine he would have had a beard in 76-77 though. I haven't seen the Bernadette Peters - Andy Kaufman movie to my knowledge; have to keep that in mind....I had a crush on Bernadette as a youngster. She's cute and seems to have a great personality.

The walrus was Paul.

I don't know. I'm not seeing him in any of this footage. Be cool if true though.
