Can anyone recommend shows with particularly great versions of Althea? Was perusing through the database of my collection and realized I only have about 8 shows with this song (yeah, most of my shows are 74 and earlier) and wondered if anyone had suggestions.

Thanks!

Yes, 3-15-90 Terrapin official release (also on Without A Net). 7-19-89 Alpine is amazing.

The 89-90 versions are hot, indeed - very tight & well played. However, for Althea, I REALLY like the early versions (79-82) when you could see it in the 2nd set. A LOT slower paced, typically, but WAY more explorative. ALSO, Jerry typically sang the verses in different orders each time - especially in 79-80. A SICKLEBERRY version can be found on 7-10-81 St. Paul, MN. Here's the setlist (LOOK AT THE POST-DRUMS/SPACE!!!)...

Band Grateful Dead
Venue St. Paul Civic Center Arena
Location St. Paul, MN
Date 7/10/81 - Friday

I: Jack Straw [5:40] ; Sugaree [12:20] ; Mama Tried [2:33] > Mexicali Blues [4:36] ; Loser [7:14] ; Cassidy [4:57] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:35] > C C Rider [8:03] ; Ramble On Rose [7:54] ; Let It Grow [12:00] > Don't Ease Me In [3:16]

II: Samson And Delilah [6:28] ; Althea [8:43] ; Estimated Prophet [10:56] > Eyes Of The World [11:52] > Space [3:16] > Drums [11:45] > Space [5:53] > Uncle John's Band [7:42] > Playing In The Band [6:54] > China Doll [5:42] > Uncle John's Band [1:09] > Playing In The Band [2:37] > Around And Around [3:55] > Good Lovin' [4:25#]

www.archive.org

Search there...you should be able to get any and all of those shows. Just put the dates in the seach box.

Here's the link for the St. Paul 1981 show I mentioned:

Here's the epic NYE show. The whole show is pretty amazing. Althea kicks off a very cool third set. Not Fade Away is a churning beast with Brent bringing it in with some funky Moog stuff....

I appreciate the links. For the most part I do not download shows from the archive since you can't download soundboards from them. I can generally find a good soundboard on one of the torrent sites.

I'm sure there's already a thread somewhere about this, but there's a LOT to be said for a great AUD recording vs the SBD.

I like the great effort that people are doing combinding the two together.
