Anybody got a copy of the actual sheet music to shakedown they could email me? Or any modal help with Jerry's parts ? Trying to change but remain the same ... kinda to explain ... I have never tried to note for note duplicate any of the solo's or anything ...I usually play by feel, go where it takes me, but I am just lost during the changes in the solo for some reason, and I think I play pretty well ...

That comes right from the Garcia/Hunter Songbook. You can play it in what ever position you like but the original position in the book is the first.

The basic framework I use is G mixolydian with some strategic emphasis on the chord changes from time to time. D blues over the Dm which happens to be nicely encompassed within G mixolydian which is the same notes as D dorian I believe.

F lydian over Fmaj7, E phrygian over Em7 and D dorian (or blues for a bit of an edge heading back to the G) over the Dm7.

All are the same G mixolydian (or in the case of D blues encompassed within) notes.

For the end jam over C7 I play mostly C blues with the 2nd, 6th, maj 3rd and blue note added in as seen fit.

Some chromatics throughout.

I'm not the greatest with the mode thing so if I'm wrong someone please point it out.

Got my head into a Shakedown space. Here's my take on that lick jg would vamp on in the end jam.

I start each half phrase slightly differently to show how each would work, one chromatic one not.

Okay this makes ALOT of sense to me ....it seemed to me that Jerry was changing keys in the solo's and in a snese he is, but just changing the root and staying with the G mixo .... this has got me going in the right direction ... thanks ALOT !!!!!!!

All in all, for those out there getting a grip on their theory, Shakedown is a perfect song to "epiphanize" with. Seeing the patterns all the way up and down are pretty easy, working the same group of notes over chord changes is exactly what one needs to do to get a firm grip on theory. Not to mention, is there any song more fun to jam on then Shakedown?

Another really easy one to get working on is Dark Star.

A mixo = E Dorian

When I started studying jazz theory in college, I asked my teacher about using it in a Grateful application. His immediate reply was Dark Star, as he put it, basically the Dead's version of modal jazz. It really helped to sit there and play Dark Star for 45 minutes along with the band, rather than sit there and just run through scales by myself.

I was getting into Shakedown Street last night, and wondering about the variations on the key of C, among other challenges.

So that's great advice on modes - I'll have a look at it again with a view to keeping the bass groove going while adding some interest.
