Verse 1 || G / / / | % | F / / / | % :||

Well they tell me of a pie up in the sky, Waiting for me when I die.

But between the day you're born and when you die,

They never seem to hear you even your cry.

So as sure as the sun will shine, I'm gonna get my share now, what's mine

And the harder they come, the harder they fall one and all.

Trying to drive me underground

And they think they have got the battle won,

I say, "forgive them Lord they know not what they've done."

Break (Intro) || C G / / | F G / / | C G / / | F / / / :||

Verse 3 And I'll keep on fighting for the things I want,

Though I know that when you're dead you can't

without beeing too wise with these things I'd say it' in the key of C....
basic chords in C: C, F and G (1,4,5)
but I don't know the song too good, there will be someone who knows it for sure

I_ii_iii_IV_V_vi_vii__I
C_Dm_Em__F__G_Am_Bdim_C

Looks Like the Key of C.

V>IV = G>F

iii>vi = Em>Am

Theme:
And the harder they come, the harder they fall one and all.

V>IV>I = G>F>C

I got the Keystone records in 10th grade ('78/'79).
Always liked the way Jer bends dem strangs on this one.

melvin seals on the keys in 89 / 90 was very cool...sort of sounded like a huge xylophone....simply aweson.

this is one of the 1st songs i learned to play. the soloing is easy.

the g f c is all in the same area and then the em am combo is fun as well....

Am jams are awesome.

I learned a cool soloing trick form this song.

To solo over the verse (the G F part) u solo in c major and u get very jerry-esque notes.

well i find that pretty much any song that chages between 2 chords like this you play a major scale staring on the IV(I think). if the chords are G and F, you play c major scale. If they are B and A(fire on the mountain for example) you play E major scale. Im pretty sure that this is some sort of mode, though im not sure what its called.(someone who knows guitar theory im sure can correct me on this)

all I know is that using that mode( i think its a mode) gives me my best jerry tone, hands down.

THanks a lot bill, thats just the info i was looking for. So it is both Cmaj ionian, and Gmaj mixolydian. WHich one would u call it? is both of them right?

After reading your post in that thread I realized that I pretty much solo using a hybrid style of maj mixolydian mode and minor pentatonics scales to recreat jerry's sound most effectively.

I'm a bit of a keyidiot - so I'm with the conventional wisdom above - C

That being said I'm all in for changing up with the chords through the progression.

Here's a little chord dity you can strum out over the C

(/) Slide Up () Slide Down (h) Hammer On (p) Pull Off (b) Bend (r) Release (v) Vibrato

E|--8--8--7--7------------------
B|--8--8--8--8--10--10--8---8---
G|--9--9--9--9--9---9---9---9---
D|--------------10--10--10--10--
A|------------------------------
E|------------------------------

hell, you could do the G & F as well
