So my friend decided he finally wants to upgrade his equipment. Right now he is playing on novice equipment. So my question is what are some good basses for under 1200 and good amps for under 800? He wants to go for a John Kahn sound. Maybe Fender Jazz? And for the amp Ampeg? Please help out here!

Fender Precision bass(USA) and ampeg amp (i don't know all the model numbers etc.) SWR also very good.

Kahn played a late 50's Precision bass, not sure if the pickups were stock. He also played the Steinie, but then went back to the Fender. The amp he'd used most was Ampeg, but I'd seen him with others, one which involved a cool-looking custom 2x15 cab.

Kahn also gigged at least once w/ JGB on a Travis Bean TB2000 bass in 77 (spring I wanna say). fwiw I've never seen a pic of him playing an Ampeg; it's almost always a blonde Fender Showman head atop (and presumably preamp-only, into) a McIntosh MC2300 power amp, and a 2x15.
