I've found thought the route of our disscussions that some may not understand the overall point of the modes.

I view the modes as a map to the neck of the guitar. a means to learning where notes repeat themselves and how to conect these points together.

When sitting down to use the modes you want to avoid thinking in terms of ionian or aolian and all that jazz. it's simply a means to playing the entire guitar instead of just a small area.

when someone approaches me with a new piece they want me to play on or help them rewrite my question isn't which possition in the scale do you want me to play, my standard question would be, what key are we in and where would you like the grace note.

from this point i take the key were in, knowing exacly where to find every note in that key (if i know my modes i know my notes) and fiddle around with various intervales intill i find something i like.

the modes should not be looked at as a guide, but rather a map.

this is my thoughts on the modes. it's more of an approach rather than an answer. use it as a tool not as a method

Spilly,
I just wanted to make sure I understand where you are comming from.
For an example of what you described, you mean to say to memorize the fretboard simply practice by picking a key, start on the 1rst and play through the entire scale back to the root on different places of the fretboard, searching out the notes and saying them aloud, then start on the second of the scale and play the entire scale back to the second (useing the notes in that scale), then the starting on the third, fourth, etc. in each key, not particullary worring about the particular mode you are playing based on the scale you are in? Thanks, peace

these are the basic mode possitions, they are to be used as a map to navigate the entire neck.

once you learn the pattern you can easily chnge keys simply by changing the root note of the scale possition

note that each possition covers 4 or five frets at a time, use all 4 fingers while playing these runs

these are the mode possitions for the key of G

possition 1

E-2-3----5--
B---3----5--
G-2---4--5--
D-2---4--5--
A-2-3----5--
E-2-3----5--

possition 2

E---5-7-8-
B---5-7-8-
G-4-5-7---
D-4-5-7---
A---5-7---
E---5-7-8-

possition 3

E-7-8---10-
B-7-8---10-
G-7---9----
D-7---9-10-
A-7---9-10-
E-7-8---10-

possition 4

E---10----12----
B---10----12-13-
G-9----11-12----
D-9-10----12----
A-9-10----12----
E---10----12----

possition 5

E----12----14-15-
B----12-13----15-
G-11-12----14----
D----12----14----
A----12----14-15-
E----12----14-15-

this is a very effective way to get to know the neck of you guitar.

have fun
