S&D was written by Rev. Gary Davis, same guy from whom Jorma Kaukonen learned a good chunk of his fingerstyle technique.

Traditional, I believe, but the rev does a great version..

Oh, I know the Rev. Gary Davis wrote it,but you have to admit, Bob's take on it is practically a completely different song.

I don't know about it being a completely different song at all. Sure its got drums and guitar solos, but its essentially the same song.

But yeah as far as it being traditional, I just researched that Blind Willie Johnson's is the first known recording, under the title "If I Had My Way". Davis' is the earliest one I've heard personally.

I like every one of his tunes in some shape or form. So I really don't have a favorite song. It switches weekly sometimes daily. I sing the Bob Weir songs so it's what ever we're working on. Throw them in a hat, pick one, sounds good to me. That's my mentality towards his songs.

One Bob song I really like, even though not written by him, is "New Minglewood Blues", particularly the 80s version that starts on the I chord, especially those that really rock hard... always makes me smile. Ten more that I like a lot:

Black Throated Wind
Cassidy
Mexicali Blues
Sugar Magnolia
Looks Like Rain
Jack Straw
Greatest Story
One More Saturday Night
Estimated Prophet
Lazy Lightning/Supplication
