To be fair, they needed to take some extended time off BAD. Jerry needed to either get well, or make the decision to move on to other things that held his interest better. He was obviously done being interested in the Dead at the time. And none of that was ever going to happen being on the road all the time.
My last shows as well. As I recall, they seemed like a band that should be playing in a bandshell for some civic event... I dunno, just my impression. Light music, not to intense, kinda singsongy with Vince's lame shit. Even the Shakedown and Box O' were tame compareed to earlier versions - as if done by rote. And the Samba and even the Rain just were embarassing.
The douchebags that crashed gates deserved a little credit for the whole scene collapsing, imho. FU, if you were one of 'em. (not directed at you, WD)
Last tune seen: Brokedown... which seems appropriate.
