MXR Dyna Comp?

MXR Dyna Comp?

Postby Capt Rosebuddy » Thu May 12, 2011 7:45 am

Is is possible that Jerry was using a MXR Dyna Comp for a little while in 1976? See Grateful Dead Gear p. 169 (apologies can't find a duplicate of the pic online).
The photo in question are from the Oct '76 Oakland Coliseum shows that where co headlined with The Who, so it could be Townshend's (?)
Actually the compressor would kind of account for the rather mellow tone of the Bean in '76 (see Boston Music Hall 6/11) as compared to say..anything from '77.

Show's available via Dick's picks 33.

Obviously if some sharper tack than I could figure out how to post the photo in question that would be great.
thanks.

The Phase 100 and the Dynacomp are Bobby's... The instrument cable from the Phase 100 is draped over the stand next to his Boogie, the cable out of the Dynacomp is running to the Boogie.

Weir and compression = peanut butter and jelly. Garcia and compression, not so much.
Honest to the point of recklessness.

Another factor would be that you are talking about two different Travis Beans: June & July '76 is the TB-1000A (H-H), while August '76 thru Sept. 3, '77 is the TB-500 (S-S-S). But June 76 doesn't really sound mellow to me at all- imho there's some VERY crispy tones coming from Garcia in tunes like Dancin', Might As Well, Help>Slip...

That really is just insane that you're holding and playing THAT guitar!! I mean seriously, the sounds that came thru that axe changed my life, and for the better...

Dang it indeed! The enemy is listening right?

I'm still a touch skeptical, although the stage does look rather snug. '76 was a year for new stuff, including me (2.5.76;)!

it is, but not mine, it's the owner of that guitars place.

on topic, iirc, jerry is only using a wah at this point. possibly experimenting occasionally with other effects, but i don't hear a compressor. the slight compression you hear is more then likely coming from the output transistors of the Mc2300.

need to steer this back on topic! 8)

rosebuddy,

if you look at that picture on page 169 closely you will see what appears to be a chrome topped(vox?) wah pedal on jerry's side by his mic. you can also make out the cabling to the wah.

Case Closed, I can dig it. The Phase 100 in that photo is a bit of a red herring, I never knew Weir used/tried one out.
cheers.

Back onto the MXR Dynacomp for just a bit - although Jerry did not use it, it is still a very cool effect pedal available at a pretty good price - got mine new for like 80 bucks or so. Point being that I was looking for a clean signal boost - read up on those, came across the Keely compressor which looks very sweet but over 200 bucks, and decided to try the Dynacomp. I like it because it not only boosts my signal up to get a bit louder without messing with a volume pedal - it adds a great deal of sustain to lead notes - both super clean and crunchy - and also evens out chords when playing rythym. So if you are looking for a nice effect to add that is not over the top - give it a try.
