One thing I noticed about JK and verified at DCU center was his usage of the Neck PU.

I would say at least 50% of his solo's if not more are using the neck PU.

I use it to and can identify that tone instantly.

I know this is an old topic but I asked JK about hm using a compressor and this is his reply..

"it is not compressing at all, it is only used as a noise gate, and only where the local electrical mains are "dirty"... it is patched in my on-board effects loop rack on its own switchable loop... I hardly use it with Furthur at all (maybe only at one of the "rehearsal" venues and a couple of the older, smaller theaters)"

What does he mean exactly by dirty electrical mains?

Some venues have dirty/noisy electricity. I think GD would supply clean power to the stage to eliminate noise. Furthur may also.

Remember Parish talking about how Jerry could tell if the electricity changed during a show? Something like "the voltage just dropped about 5", Steve would check it and sure enough..

^^^ That is why he was so awesome. Back to John, I guess he doesn't need it so much now that he moved on up to the big time. Back in the DSO days I'm sure it was quite handy.

Yes, you most certainly would. If a place has old electric circuitry, You'll notice slight to drastic changes in volume and noise from your rig. This is what I have to put up with during the summer time.

Same here, playing outdoor festivals where you either have a generator or old electric circuitry def effects my rig. I can see why JK would want to use that.

Did I see it correctly on last night's TRI broadcast that JK had just a 1x12 cab for that smaller venue- or did I miss something?

I know JK has a single 1x12 home rig cab I have seen pictures of it when he was showcasing the Alembic he was loaned

I played alot of Generator powered gigs in the 80's.
The term used to describe the sound degradation (usually caused by a crappy earth ground) was "Motorboating".
It seemed to affect the PA more than my amp, but it sounded like a rough idling motorboat for sure.

I think that the 1x12 is a K120 he uses the Trio Preamp with that rig. I wonder if that was the rig for TRI, It seems he uses that anytime the Furthur rig is traveling or on the truck.

I believe that the first Furthur shows he may have used that rig. I recall seeing an aluminum dome sparkling through the grille cloth... but upon consulting the pics, I think that one was a 2x12. Regardless, the way the acoustics and monitoring are in that space, I wonder if he just didn't need the additional coverage.

Did anyone else think his tone REALLY sounded the best it's been? Not quite Jerry, but Jerry inspired for sure. Gotta love it!

And I think that's what he's looking for. He doesn't want to be a Jerry clone.
