Not to derail the topic - but I'd say that Lieber is actually the guy - now that Doug Irwin is (and has been for quite some time) out of the game.

Lieber literally worked alongside Doug Irwin and designed the Tiger shape we all love.

If Irwin is Jordan, Lieber is Pippin.

Everyone else is like Bill Wennington.

It's certainly great that Mr Lieber worked with Irwin back in the day, however in the end, it's the quality of guitar produced now that counts. Unless you have played both a Moriarty and a Lieber, I don't see it fair to compare them.

don't get me wrong or take offense to this, but this is complete nonsense. yes lieber designed the irwin deluxe logo(a world inlay added to an eagle already there), helped draw out the shape and even cut a lot of the wood on tiger, but he wasn't there when it was all put together with tiger. he's admitted that. and that is pretty much the extent of liebers association with jerry's irwin guitars. not rosebud or wolf, except for the possible refin of wolf which he did not perform. he has also admitted that. he was there and then he was gone, and that is why he is pretty much not written in the history of it all until a couple years back when he enlighten most that he was actually there at irwin guitars for an apprenticeship. his recreation of tiger in no way comes close to the accuracy or detail that moriarty put into his recreation of jerry's tiger guitar. not that liebers tiger is in any way shape or form a bad instrument, it is not, it is a pretty awesome interpretation looking at the photo's, but moriarty's comes in at a little under a third of what lieber charges for his and moriarty's are practically SPOT ON! DO NOT GET ME WRONG, i am NOT bashing lieber at all! he is an outstanding person, a MASTER luthier and inventor. that goes without saying, but to compare him to a pippen/jordan combo with irwin is proposterous. maybe a dennis hopson/michael jordon combo, but we shouldn't be comparing the person, we should be comparing the work.

I'll take this one step Furthur and just say it...Morairty has done it agian! Period. Look at what this thread is about, Matt is building a guitar for the everyday player that is spot on. When I started playing GD music I could not even think of having a Garcia "shaped" guitar let alone know what really made it work. Thanks to Tom Leiber for being a part of this board at all and give us an insight to what was going on "back in the day". That said let's just let a good thing be what it is and leave it at that. Thanks Matt! I still can't afford your guitar but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it! Keep it comin!

Compare the work all you want. The pictures of Lieber's "Garcia" blow the other guys out of the water - it's not even close. I actually think it's nicer than Jerry's. No, I haven't played it - I don't have 32k. But if you really want to talk price points - I'm sure if Lieber could create the Gigerstein, he could probably customize whatever you ask for depending on your budget. So that's not an argument I acknowledge. Sorry.

Ultimately, we're talking about the difference between imitators and originators. Copycats and creators. Maybe Picasso's brother could paint a beautiful bowl of fruit. I'd still say that Pablo was "the man". Obviously we all accept Irwin as the Picasso of Jerry's instruments - but, unfortunately, he stopped making guitars a long time ago. Yet here is Lieber, a guy with all the first-hand experience, involvement and knowledge from that era and you are arguing against him in favor of replicators? Really? Why?

Was the list of associations Lieber has with the Tiger guitar and D. Irwin supposed to be contrary to my initial statement? Because I actually find it to be corroboratory. "The guy" was involved in the scene, continues to build, and that's all I was commenting on. Nothing more and nothing personal against Moriarty or the rest of the ever-growing D. Irwin Replica Club.
