Thoughts on JBL 110s?

I couldn't find anything on the board about these. Lots of discussion on the JBL K 120 and E 120- but nothing on the ten inchers.

Has/does anybody use them? What are your impressions?

I played with a pair of k110 speakers in a small closed back cab for many years and they never failed me and I mean never. Played a good 100 gigs with that cab. The cab had a baffle inside to separate the two speakers from each other. I found them to have great tone and at least with my particular amp/guitar combination was able to dial in bass response that nicely complimented our bass player who plays with a lot of low-mids. When I first went to open back cabinets they lost a lot of their bass response so I went to a 4X10 open back. That was pure heaven. Put it about 16" off the floor and about a foot away from the wall and the sound was big. Probably very similar to a classic 410 Fender Bassman amp.

I love mine. I got some professional advice to build the cab open back, let them breathe. They spank the top notes like West LA fade away and Dupree's, and make a fender blackface sound its best. I like them more than my E120 for moderate to low volume. For high volume the E120 is much better sounding than pushing the 10's. But you can easily get about 100 watts out of a 2x10( RMS 70 watts each) but I don't want to have to replace them so I don't push them to 140 watts. I use a 50 watt Mac amp and Gdec preamp that would have to strive to reach 100watts. I asked Vic about his one time he really likes them too. I believe he moved them out of a cab and back into a combo amp. He has a good ear for Jerry tone. I know Brad loves his too. There should be info all around here about them, you won't be sorry to grab you a few while you can. These speakers will be worth gold one day.

Finally pulled the trigger Thanks to everyone for your input- it was invaluable, and these beasties are SOMETHING!

Quirky almost in the sense they are almost "over-responsive". But I am digging them.

(I know- they will look better mounted outside the cabs, but the mounting posts are mounted inside, and I just wanted to get up-and-running)

I've got one K110 that sometimes goes in my '68 Princeton Reverb and sometimes goes in my '72 8-ohm Champ. They're pretty amazing speakers really. When cranked, they do the JBL/Jerry thing nicely. At lower volumes, they can be a bit crispy, but still nice.

And that's exactly what I needed for this amp. I had a nice pair of Jensens in the cabs initially, but the amp was still a bit dark and scoopy for my tastes.

I thought about having it modified (Fenderized) - but with the k 110s, it's right where I want it to be.

On a side note- I am REALLY happy that all these new pseudo-boutique (and I guess most newer amps?) amps are set up with multiple impedance taps- 4-ohm, 8ohm, etc. That is a really nice touch.

^ Sweet. I guess I should have bought k110 speakers last holidays rather than what I bought. I might be enjoying with its sound by now. Oh well, regrets.

I have a 2X10 Hard Truckers cabinet in great condition, $700 for the cab or $1050 with a pair of JBL K-110s.



Those speakers are just so sweet sounding ... I love them. I made a custom impulse response file of them for my digital rig, so I can get that sound anytime now, but they are highly recommended.

I'd be leery of pushing them too hard for fear of blowing one, but they sound great in the Vibrolux Reissue they are currently residing in. I can also say accurately that Jerry played through these particular K-110s. So did Bobby, Phil, Mickey, Brent and Billy. They were part of the PA used at the US Festival in 82.

I've had a pair of e110's for a few months and just picked up a k-110. It's noticably warmer (more alnico-ish). I like them in both the princeton and the vibrolux, but nothing non fender. I also have both e120 and K120's and the similarity/dif amongst the magnet composition is similar across sizes.

Damn... Pair of original cone d110f's sitting at BIN on eBay for 389... Who new a low ball 200 offer would take the pair. Kicking myself...
