I feel a little shy posting this, because I'm sure you guys play the hell out of a guitar a lot more than me; but what works for me keeping modes straight is going by the key signature. Like I would call G maj, A dorian or D mix all "one sharp"; or like F maj, G dorian or C mix I would call them all " one flat".

That's right - that puts the modes into context of the key.
