It's interesting that the neck sits up as high as it does on that guitar; some of Scott Walker's guitars are built that way, as well. Makes it a little more challenging with the pickups as they have to rise fairly far out of the body to reach the strings. Scott and I were talking about doing a metal surround on the pickups on my new guitar instead of the usual thicker wood rings he does, so it's good to see how it looks with the brass and the pickups rising pretty aggressively up. Looks nice.

ya there are a few 'surprises' I am not too happy about - but overall there is no point in complaining because it's not going to change anything! My immediate need is exactly what you pointed out - the pickups sit so high they actually move a lot!

When Gary set up my Tiger, he did that same very sharp angle between the bridge and tailpiece, I don't know why, I raised my tailpiece a bit. Looks like you're just asking to break a string.

The bottom of my fretboard on the Tiger is about even with the brass, but my bridge pickup sits pretty high up, and they move pretty easily, too.

jkstraw - you could stack an extra pickup ring or two to raise them up so there's not as much pickup hanging out in the air - if you can get another. I had to do this with my WGD - though it has individual rings.

Some folks build Tigers with the neck sitting high like that and no angle...... think older SG's and Flying V's..........., Irwin did Jerrys that way, not sure why though..... For me, a long tenon lowered deeper in the cavity, give it a 4 degree neck angle, and that problem is solved. You could take your ring off and put a piece of foam cut to fit the route and that will give you a little pressure on the pickups to keep them still........

I agree with you, absolutely, but Jerry's were built very similarly with the neck so proud of the body and very little angle. They didn't stick out as far as this, though, but I was surprised to see how little angle was on Rosebud.

Having said that--that's a gorgeous guitar, jkstraw. Enjoy that thing!

I think the Ransom guitar is a beauty! I love the brass binding on the neck. Does it have fret markers on the other side?

It's really all about the angles, isn't it? I wonder what, if any, effect it has on the ultimate tone of the guitar.



Top left is Tiger, top right is Rosebud; you can see that the fretboard on Rosebud sits up pretty high but the body of the guitar is carved down and the brass ring for the pickups juts out so the approximate ratio of fretboard to the surface of the brass is similar.

My Tiger is next; the fretboard sits pretty low comparatively. But my binding is thicker on the neck, too.

And a Walker Special guitar is on the bottom; his bodies are carved away so the bridge pickup sits a lot lower, thus the very high pickup ring on that one (it helps that he often carves his out of wood, because he can make the neck ring less steep.

I finally got a matching pickup for the bridge. These are vintage Super 2s but they sound like new (no degradation in tone).
