How's this: "I shot me another, we'll, I'll dare they won't grow old"?
I'm sure I've heard this line this way and it makes sense.

in the versions i have heard which admittingly is not many it's always "shot me another, that man he won't grow old"
"wonder who will water all the children of the garden when they sigh about the barren lack of rain and droop so hungry 'neath the sky, ahhhh -ayyyy"

Bobby has been improvising lyrics for this one like

One of them cowboys, he starts to draw
I got a bottle and cracked him in the jaw-instead of- I shot him down, he never saw

me and my uncle

this has always been one of my favorite dead tunes and depending on which performance you listen too, there is a different level of energy that goes into this song every time. i,ve noticed that in all of the livelyer versions, bobby says something to the effect of "hot damm" or "god damm", he wont grow old. also try playing this song using C to Am for the first three verse lines then C to D for the fourth line and then switch to Am E Am for the verse ending.

I heard one the other day, could've sworn he said "shot me another, dropped dead, he won't grow old"

I'd add G--A after A over "way" in "just half way" and B--Em at end after Em.

bobby's ornaments

Postby spilly » Tue Dec 06, 2005 4:06 am

here a cool little ornament bobby uses to spice it up. it starts off with G to Em Barred. shape your G as such-XX9787 and you Em-XX9987.

while playing the G he throws a quick step up to C-XX10988,and then right back !=downstroke ^=upstroke

G C G Em
S ! ! ^ ^ ^ ! ! ^ ^ ^
E-7-7-7--8-7---7-7-7-7-7-
B-8-8-8--8-8---8-8-8-8-8-
G-7-7-7--9-7---9-9-9-9-9-
D-9-9-9-10-9---9-9-9-9-9-
A------------------------
E------------------------

that's the basic form, fill it in as you wish.

the forthe line goes to A G A

A G A
S ! ! ^ ! ! ^ ! ^
E-5-5-5-5-3-3-3-5-
B-5-5-5-5-3-3-3-5-
G-6-6-6-6-4-4-4-6-
D-7-7-7-7-5-5-5-7-
A-----------------
E-----------------

then Em B Em shaped as such

s ! ! ^ ! ^ ! ! ^ ! ^ ! ! ^ !
E-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-
B-8-8-8-8-8-7-7-7-7-7-8-8-8-8-
G-9-9-9-9-9-8-8-8-8-8-9-9-9-9-
D-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-
A-----------------------------
E-----------------------------

and so on and so forth. I was standing 5 foot away from bob as he played this, the chords are right on, the stumming is my interitation, but it works like a charm, have fun.

When I do it live, I sing "hot damn he won't grow old".

That "hot" vocally works well with the Bobby style of singing when you are almost out of breath.
