Or how about a bigger multi-pole switch that simultaneously inserts a resistor pad (post buffer perhaps) whenever a pickup gets switched to series humbucker. Just tweak the pad resistor values to get it right where you want it. This would also let you keep your same Mutron and Dist+ levels, but only change the tone, not to mention eliminate 60Hz hum when you need to.

Hey folks:

Waldo was kind enough to send me a version of his unity gain buffer, specially modified so even a non-soldering type guy like me could install it. So, I did.

I've also been working on trying to get my sound as close as possible to Garcia's miked rig, as heard through the 82-85 soundboards; that means some slight dirt to the sound, subtle reverb and very little low end. It's getting there, I think. It might sound kind of thin on its own, but if you listen to the boards, that's what makes it cut through so well.

So, here's some brief clips, various, as described. (Probably way more than anyone wants to hear ... LOL) I like Waldo's buffer a lot, it's a subtle difference from the Cutler CB1 I had in the guitar originally, but it's a bit smoother.

The guitar is my Resurrection Tiger, with three DiMarzio Super II pickups and, now, Waldo's buffer. I was all set up in the studio, so I just sat and played for a while. I used more bridge pickup than normal because I am working on getting the preamp to break up where I want it to ...

First off ... a little Bird Song ... middle pickup, single coil, switches to the bridge as a humbucker halfway through (note how the sound breaks up more). This is the longest clip.

I just installed one of Waldo's Tiger Buffers in my main axe, a custom telecaster. I've used a number of buffers over the years, and this is hands down the cleanest, most neutral and pure sounding buffer I've ever used. Great build quality, and easy wiring, and is truly an exact clone of Jerry's Tiger buffer. It is a bit large, so I did have to route a rectangular compartment under the pickguard, but it's invisible. Works like a charm.

Good timing to resurrect (so to speak) this topic.

I've been playing a lot lately, and now that I've had a couple of weeks with Waldo's buffer, I can really say it's a great device and improvement.

My first impression was probably colored a bit due to the lower gain between it and the CAE buffer, it wasn't driving my preamp as hard, so the tone was a little different.

I was playing around with a new pedal to control my delay level, and just sort of listening to the buffer through the various pickup combinations and some effects. I hit record and got about 9 minutes of some various things. The buffer is very responsive and musical, especially on certain effects, like an overdrive or a wah pedal; the CAE buffer sounds harsher to me now (although it is in a different guitar with the same pickups).

Great job, Waldo! If I were building another guitar, I would opt for this buffer.

If anyone can stand to listen to another 9 minutes of aimless E7 noodling ... LOL

Here's my "Tiger-Strat" with the Waldo buffer (I still like to refer to it as the "TUGB"). These vids were shot at the Oregon Country Fair, Main Stage Meadow, last Saturday for the Teddy Bear Picnic, the end-of-Fair-season family potluck. (they use a temporary stage for this event, as the Main Stage gets put away for the season.)

Get all your parts together before routing anything. Down to the last screw. Remember you're building a guitar and not just a series of work-arounds in the shape of a guitar. Don't let the impatiance of youth get the best of you.
