Loser tab..

Postby ummagummas08 » Sat Mar 14, 2009 4:34 pm

Decided to throw all the chords and other parts of the structure into the tab for easier learning (at least for me)
If something is wrong, feel free to tell me the changes that need to be made. Thanks!

I think if you enclose your formatting in the "Code" tags, your chords will stay where you left them (more or less)

like:

Code: Select all
D                          E
out in the cold rain and snow

I haven't looked at it in a while, but I guess my question would be, is this any different than what's posted on the site?

Gots to be careful with dem der slash chords. That C/B is incorrect. It's actually Em/B. It's a Em triad inversion with a B as the leading tone. As Jerry walks down on the root in the open position you can hear Weir voice out the triads in the middle of the neck.

C, Em/B, Am, G, Am.....

A C with a B in the bass would be harmonically incorrect nor does it sound right.

On some of the old ones from 72, etc you'll hear Phil drop a big fat E note there particularly leading up to the solo. Weir will often use a G triad there as well depending on his mood and prevailing winds. But Garcia always walks it down the same and the rest of the band supports the harmony of the chord structure...

Fun tune!

I'd add that I've seen jg play an Em instead of the G in the above run. Got a vid in my favorites on my youtube page showing this. He actually only does it on the first run through. Whether a 'mistake' or simply a with the wind in the moment type of deal, I don't know. Both ways work.

thanks prep and Tiger- that's what it looked like before I posted it =/

@ebick - no- just made it for easier sight playing.

@jonarob- the C/B sounded right while I was playing the tune on mandolin, but wouldn't an Em with a B in the bass just be an Em, since it's part of the chord?

No, when a chord is written as a slash chord it signifies that the chord is an inversion. Meaning that something other than the root is the leading tone. In the case of Loser Garcia walks that down just using the root, C,B,A,G,A

The rest of the band inturn fleshes out the chords as the triads. It's very integral to how the Dead worked, or any band for that matter. If you get a bunch of guys in the same room that are just playing the root all day it gets kind of boring.

I just spooled up a version of Loser from 73 and Phil on the walk down in question plays alternate notes of those same chords: E,G,C,E,A

Weir has some great step-wise action going on in his triads as well. He's doing reverse arpeggios of the chords which mesh up beautifully with what Garcia and Lesh and Godchaux all do. None of them playing the same thing but some how it all fits together.....

I think I've always thought of the chord in that step down movement as "G/B", since I tend to add the top G on the E string- thus C G/B Am G Am. However now that I am taking stock of it, I realize play neither a D (G maj) nor an E (E min) here, I really just arpeggiate lo B, hi G, hi B into the Am. Playing straight chords, I think E minor is what works best.

Interesting... I caught a vid (somewhere) of Bobby just doing a chromatic walking down of the root:
Code: Select all
D-5-5-5--2----
A-3-2-1--0--5-
E------------3--

I started it playing it that way and haven't changed. But that's not saying that is THE Bobby part. Or the part he ALWAYS plays.

He did it once. It jived with my ears and my bands so I never bothered to look back. Must reinvestigate tonight with beers....
