Hi guys,

Been playing around with China Cat recently and am now looking for what the basic chord underpinnings of the transition to I Know You Rider. I am not asking for the riffs that Bobby plays, just what they fit on top of. Yes, if I had as much free time as I would like, I could play the CD over and over until I (maybe) figure it out but if someone has already done so, why re-invent the wheel. Thanks!

No, it's just not D. Garcia plays D and G.

He's just comping back and forth as he pleases, depending on what he's hearing from Weir.

You can pull it off with the 10th fret D chord, with the open E shape, and lean over to the G chord, which is an open A shape, also at the 10th fret.

Very simple. Jer's just sitting back letting Bobby run the show for a change. Once Booby runs out of steam, Jerry comes in with a D7 (real strong, setting up for the baton passing), and this is all high up on the neck.

During the regular verse, while singing, I really want to go to a D or D7 chord as a resolve for the second phrase. Am I nuts?

I meant when singing the China Cat verses. Going up and down from G to F and back is fine for the first line, but it seems to want a D at the end of the second one. That is just my own ear, though.

For example in this verse, I'll put in the chords as my bad ears would like them to be:

G..................................F
Look for a while at the china cat sunflower,
G....................................D7
Proud walking jingle in the midnight sun.
G................................F
Copperdome bodhi drip a silver kimono,
.......G..............................F...........
Like a crazy quilt stargown through a dream night
G

After the 1st solo ?
Where it goes to the D hits the C and resolves to D ?
That part ?
Rider ?
Sub a D7 for D right before going to the F ?

Jerry plays the China Cat Riff while singing and hits a D note at the 5th fret...a full chord I dont know how that would work ...
Sometimes I think the F is the vocal part not the guitar part ...
I try to play the riff and not over empathize the F - ness.

Hmmm. Right now, I am just playing the tune by myself. I do the single note line intro stuff and then switch to the chords when I sing. Playing the chords helps me with fretboard visualization when I play leads, as I tend to sort of connect the various chords and their different positions.

I'll have to sit down and listen to a recording of the GD again to try to pick out what's going on bearing what you've said in mind.

When its just you alone playing that could work maybe.
In a band situation I try to follow the vocals with the riff.Plus you got the rest of the band to lean on.Too many chords ruin the stew.
I wonder what Bobs riff would reveal chord wise if it was taking apart? I like when I get to play Bobs riff.
E 72 is THE China Rider I hear in my head.

Now that's interesting. Because, while the rest of the time I am playing the Jerry verse lead riff (and singing), the places where you inserted the D7 are exactly the only places where I actually drop in the F chord (or any chords for that matter), right at the end of every 2nd line.
