I flat pick and use my ring and middle finger for this. As usual you can work this many ways, adding the 2 on the B string, or the open high E, adjusting the picking rotation etc.

---A

Code: Select all
E|-------------------------
B|-------------------------
G|----2-------2---------2----2--------2---------2
D|----2-------2--2-----------2--------2--2----
A|--0---4--0-------3h4----0-----4--0-------3h4---0
E|-------------------------------------

Jerry didn't use his middle finger.

couldn't resist, sorry! however the ring finger is crucial in many of Jerry's picking patterns.

Good one!

I wonder how much (if at all) different his playing would have been if he hadn't lost that digit?

Another excellent one to watch is the JGB 9/1/90 DVD.

I've often wondered about this too. I think I read somewhere that he said he would have played piano or classical guitar had he a full set of fingers on that hand.

It's nothing short of incredable really, when you think he was such a fine Banjo picker(three finger rolls etc...) And how he switched between flat and fingerpicking when playing guitar was very impressive.

Interesting Shaggy. I didn't know about his take on it's affect on his musical direction.

It is pretty amazing how he'd tuck the pick away with the half finger while finger picking and then slip back to flat picking in an instant.

Yeah, if I had ten fingers on my right hand I still wouldn't be able to do that as well as Jerry did.

Deal

Postby phreaker » Wed Feb 22, 2006 1:26 pm

Good tab Bill. Deal is one of my fav. songs to mess around with, and this intro is fun.

I really wouldnt be surprised if a headline in the news read "jerry garcia from a planet not know to human beings!"

his playing is out of this world.
