Help/Slip Video Notes

Hey Gang,
I gave Help/Slip a shot on the Video thing.
It's a long song with alot of parts, so I've made it into 4 Video segments.
[Note: I just caught that I mistakenly call a "Bb7" a "B7" at the 29 sec mark of part 1, so watch for that.]
I tried to break it into a "building blocks" type of thing, for each segment.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the kind replys.
I really took on the task of learning this tune when the tab for it came out in the Dec 2005 Guitar Player mag. I also spent alot of time deciphering the JDarks tab for this one.
The cool thing is, it actually makes perfect sence from a musical standpoint. This is a tune I never thought I would be able to play. 'Been messin' with it since it was published in Em in the Grateful Dead Anthology from the like the late 70's.
I've been playing guitar in bands since the mid/late 70's, but went off on a major Pedal Steel Guitar tangent from '95 to about '05. I have really been into guitar lately, and have switched to 7-strings for the most part, but I thought I should do these vids on a common instrument.

Strummin', where do you think the Dm should be? I'll check it out.

These are my interpretations. Every time I see or hear Dead vids or recordings I see something I have turned into a bad habit, or blatently mistaken.
I'm kinda going for the "Methods for mere Mortals" approach.

Very nice once again Pete.

You've inspired me to finally get a grip on this. I've messed around with it for a long time but never quite got it together.

At the end of part 1 you cite the scale. Seems light G dorian (F Ionian?) if I'm hearing it right. I've used F dorian. I think the 2nd note your hitting is an A. Thats the maj third of F and since this is kinda a minor blues thing I'm all confused.

Can you elaborate on what's going on scale wise?

And whether or not I'm hearing it right?

Unbefuckingleavable. How do you remember all of that? I tackle this song every year or so and then promptly forget 1/2 of what I learned. I figure by the time I'm 80 I'll be able to remember the whole thing. Except when I'm 80 I'll be happy to rember not to crap my pants. Thanks for all the great stuff to work on and forget. Your tease into The Music Never Stopped gives me hope that may be your next video.

I looked at the tab. He is calling it a D minor diminished (Dmin-).
He prefaces the picture of the chord with the statement "** Play this like a Bb, just don't hit the high string."
I called it a Bb, or Bb7, because I want "Help On The Way" to be thought of as an easy, three chord "minor blues" song (not much different than say "The Thrill Is Gone".
I will try his chord tonight (don't have a guitar at hand).

So FWIW, most all of the licks/chords I choose to play are in the positions that work/sound best to me (I often wonder why Jerry or Bobby play certain things in certain positions, because it seems easier to play or sounds better to me in a different position).
The Guitar Player Tabs and JDarks show some of them in different positions, and although everyone will probably settle on a fave position, I think it is good to be able to play alot of this stuff out of different positions as a matter of general fluency (you could drill the common licks out of each CAGED position, for example).
