I could swear on the GD movie, Jerry plays something on the 4th fret between Emaj7 and A during the intro. Anyone know what chrod this might be?

Let's review the E scale:
E F# Ab A B C# Eb E

Now let's review the Emaj7 (1 3 5 7)
E Ab B Eb

Okay, good? Now if you look at the 1 3 5 7 of the Emaj7 take special note of the 3 5 7 allow the bassist to carry the root which is very common in jazz and blues.

The 3 5 7 is Ab B Eb which is the?????? Abm

Now let's examine what the hell Mr. Garcia could do off the fouth:

Now here's the rub, the Abm won't sound right on it's own but it is the *perfect* accompanying chord over the Emaj7 for another guitarist to play!

the first guy is right, it's another way to play Emaj7. just do a quick bar over the 4th fret with your first finger. it sounds better than just playing the Emaj7 at the 7th fret for every stroke.

Also, both bobby and jerry goto the Abm during the last jam kinda gives that "milkin' the turkey" kinda sound

can some kind fellow (or lady) explain the difference between a
E7 and an Emaj7? hence, would flatening the 3rd in the Emaj7 give you Em7? I know a C is a Cmaj, correct?

Flatening the third in an Emaj7 would not give you Em7. Flatening the third in an E7, would give you an Em7.

it's like this. Emaj7, is directly related to the E major scale. the 7 means that you would add the seventh note of the scale to the dominant chord. in this case the 7th of E major is D#.

the chord E7 is not directly related to the scale. the 7th note used in this situation falls one whole step down from the dominate note of the chord. if playing an E7 the added note would be a D.

if E7 is the dominant chord in the progression, you might want to solo in A or Em blues.

Neither Abm nor Emaj7 is correct; it is an A6 with no 5. (A,C#,F#)

...and flattening the 3 in a maj7 would give you a min/maj7.

The opener is an Emaj7, I got tired of disputing this and got myself the sheet music, maybe at A6 fits with the movie version, i haven't seen the movie in awhile, but if I remember properly they start the song by itself, they don't jam into it. if this is the case it would be highly unlikely they would use a chord substitution as such right in the begining of the song, these types of alterations are usually reserved for jamming inbetween parts. If they were jamming into the song it would make more sense depending on what their comming out of.
but like i said i haven't seen the movie in a long time

I watched the pertinent portion to reply to DenverEd before I posted. It's pretty cut and dried. You can certainly add the 6th to the A chord for a different flavor but I don't believe thats what DE was looking for. And if I'm not mistaken the A6 would be on the fifth fret, would it not?

Whoa, dude. We have a winner. That Emaj6 is THE one.

I've spent hours with my band working out the crazy old outro jam from the 73-74 versions (that people somehow get confused with KSM>STD), but our intros had always kept that late-70's/80's flavor, no matter how well we hit the accents and/or slowed it down ... and that's why. Jeff really is The Man and thanks for sharing that with the group!

I have to agree. I checked it again and realized the Emaj6 (or Amaj7?) is right. But as a "sub" for the A chord.

It still seems DenverEd was looking for the Emaj7 on the 4th fret but even so I'm betting he wasn't (as I wasn't) aware of the different take on the A chord.
