Getting it right...

Postby shakedown_04092 » Tue Aug 07, 2007 9:53 am

PS - if anyone wants to post a video of this, I'd be MUCH OBLIGED!

Ok, I read the 3 threads on this song, and have played it countless time myself, and still am confused on some parts and how they're played.

Listen to this version, from a recent thread someone posted (just Bob & a drum machine):

http://ia301128.us.archive.org/3/items/gd84-xx-xx.sbd.samaritano.16613.sbeok.shnf/gd1984-02-21t01_vbr.mp3

Can anyone tell me what Bobby is doing during the "chorus"? First off, I have my guitar in tune and it's not synched w/ Bob, so either the recording is off or his guitar is, so that's not helping. BUT, it sounds like he's playing E D A, though something just isn't right and it's pissing me off. I also hear him going from the E and then dropping a D>C# then to the A (sounds like just bass notes almost) every other time.

Either way, there are some nuances (we are talking about Bob, right?) in there and it's not just a straight up E the whole time.

So that's question #1.

Question #2: The Jam

Now, I read on another thread that the Jam is

Code: Select all
JAM (A D A, A E A for a while, then outro is Bm A E A, D A)

Ok....I've got the first half (Samson-type theme, thanks, that really helped clear it up for me), but the Outro....am I hearing Bm Bm...A A...E (big E chord and hold, I don't hear it go back to the A here), and then a hold on the A with a quick move the an Asus>A, or maybe even A>D>A. Hope that makes sense, it looks a little messy typed.

Fwiw, I am listening to this version (which was recommended as one of the better ones): http://ia301106.us.archive.org/3/items/gd88-03-28.sbd-matrix.9977.sbeok.shnf/gd1988-03-28d3t03_vbr.mp3

Lastly, Question #3:

When it comes back into the vocals, is it a Bm or C#m they come back in on? I'm thinknig C#m, but the tab doesn't have anything written out.

Anyways, I know it's a long post, but for those who take the time to help, thanks!

Here's how I have the song on tab, feel free to make corrections (the notes in parenthesis are "implied" notes):

Code: Select all
Throwing Stones
VERSE:
Bm        A                     E                  A
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Bm  G             A
Dizzy with eternity.
E                                 A                   E
Paint it with a skin of sky, brush in some clouds and sea
        Bm                      A
Call it home for you and me.

A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face.
But afraid, we may our lay home to waste.

CHORUS:
          E                 D     D  A
There's a fear down here we can't forget
E            D    D    A
Hasn't got a name just yet
E               D   D A
Always awake, always around
E                    D   D    A
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down, ashes, ashes, all fall down

Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime falls
And again the hunt begins and again the bloodwind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men's eyes.

It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Staking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat,
It's you and me, you and me.

E                    D   D  A
Click, flashblade in ghetto night.
Rudies looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley roll them bones.
Need that cash to feed that Jones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down, ashes, ashes all fall down

BRIDGE:
C#m            A                  E
Commissars and pin-striped bosses roll the dice
Bm (stop!)             (G)         (A)             D!  D!   E!
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price.
E              A           E      (Em7)
Money green or proletarian gray,
        Bm                     A
Selling guns instead of food today.

E                            D     D     A
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down, ashes, ashes, all fall down

JAM ON VERSE

Bm               A              E      (A)
Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
Bm              G                           A
If the spirit's sleeping, then the flesh is ink.
E                         A                E
And history's page, it is thusly carved in stone
             Bm               A
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own. (fade out on this)

“SAMSON” JAM (A D A, A E A for a while, then outro is Bm A E, A Asus2 A x2)

C#m            A                       E
If the game is lost then we're all the same
Bm (stop!)             (G)      (A)       D!  D!   E!
No one left to place or take the blame.
E                  A              E
We will leave this place an empty stone
        Bm                                    A
Or this shinning ball of blue we can call our home

E                            D     D     A
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
And the politicians are throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down, ashes, ashes all fall down

E                D    D   A
Shooting powders back and forth
Singing "black goes south while white comes north"
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing "I got mine and you got yours."

And the current fashions set the pace.
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical he rant and rage,
Singing "someone got to turn the page"

And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing "Just leave well enough alone"
But his pants are down, his cover's blown
And the politicians are throwing stones

So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause its all too clear we're on our own
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down, ashes, ashes all fall down

Bm        A                     E                  A
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Bm       G              A
Dizzying possibilities
E            D   D    A
Ashes, Ashes all fall down. (repeat)

Very close to how I play it. Here are some changes:

Code: Select all
Bm        A                     E                  A
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Bm  G             A
Dizzy with eternity.
E                                 A                   E
Paint it with a skin of sky, brush in some clouds and sea
        Bm                      A
Call it home for you and me.

A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face.
But afraid, we may our lay home to waste.

CHORUS:
          E                 D        A   ( E D A)
There's a fear down here we can't forget
E            D         A   ( E D A)
Hasn't got a name just yet
E               D     A     ( E D A)
Always awake, always around
E                    D        A
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down, ashes, ashes, all fall down

Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime falls
And again the hunt begins and again the bloodwind calls

Back to your questions...
Firstly he is heavily distorted and I'm hearing overtones and compression and heavy reverb and delay and doubled guitar parts. Truthfully, I wouldn't worry about what all he's doing there. It also could be that he is pulling the studio trick of tuning his guitar a few degrees off to get his voice to a different spot seeing as though it appears that is the main point of the recording.

CHORUS: But as to what he's doing it sounds like he might be either doing inversions or dropping the I on his chords.

SOLO RETURN: It is Bm A E A D A but it is subtle:
| Bm / A / E / / / A / / / D / A /|

POST SOLO VOCALS = C#m cuz of the bridge

I also changed your bridge chords slightly.

One other subtle difference...

During the bridge parts - the last Bm is actually a D - only one note different but it's there and changes the feel of that part just exactly right.

So like:
E A E (Em7)
Money green or proletarian gray,
D A
Selling guns instead of food today.

and:
E A E
We will leave this place an empty stone
D A
Or this shinning ball of blue we can call our home

I've never seen it like this on any tab or chord diagram for the song but I'm quite sure that it's right.

Listen to my band play it on our myspace page - you'll hear it on that part - see what you think.

edit:
I forgot - you can watch it on you tube too...

exactly... reminds me of the end of the bridge on Althea... D instead of bm

D A E
You know this space is getting hot

p.s. can someone tell me how to quote just a portion of a previous post.. I tried highlighting it and hitting "quote" but it didn't work

Yea I had the same learning curve with the quote thing. Before you open a reply page click on the "quote" icon in the upper right corner of the post you want to quote. A reply page opens with the quote ready for you. You can delete portions within the quote if you only want to quote something specific.
