I know same thing but IMO the added 5th on the way you described sounds best with folk or country songs.

One thing I've been trying lately and I think it's sounds pretty damn good is Using EMaj7>AMaj7>Emaj7.

I dig these forms of the AMaj7 or just Maj7 chords in general... Waddya think?

i've tried using the amaj7 and it does add a cool jazz feel, but i cant get away from using the plain old A

I've been playing this a lot lately and just going Emaj7 to A at betwen the 7th and 5th frets.

is that 2 variations of the Amaj7?

Ya, As far as I know those are both AMaj7 chords. I've seen the A string in the first one played open also but I think it sounds better muted.

my grateful dead anotholgy shows just a straight Emaj7 on the intro then into A on the verse. This is probably the way it was played on wake of the flood, it's only a couple of bars of Emaj7 on the album, I believe.

as we know, the dead always played it E to A, asometimes, for about 10 minutes or so, lololo.

always loved it when they jammed the intro out before the verse.
