Key of E main riff alternate.

The riff given in the 5/7th position seems a little out of character for Gerry. He seems to me to tend to play as simply as possible (usually near the open position....imagine he's playing bluegrass on an electric guitar...I'm sure that's how HE thought of it...most bluegrass is based out of open position chords).

The way I figured out the main line for Bird Song was as follows (standard tuning).

It is the same as whats given in the tab/lyric section at rukind "note-wise"...but I think it's more accurate "gerry-wise".

After saying that...I've never seen Gerry play this...so I may be way off base..my appologies if I am.

I think the only the thing you might be off on is how (J)erry spells his name.

As I think I said in that tab, I always play it in C as it is on the Garcia LP, and I posted that after numerous requests to transcribe it to E. What I posted was actually submitted by someone else, I just checked it and, as you say, note-wise, it is correct.

However, I think your assesment is correct.

BTW, I mis-posted, Bird Song is in the original key of "D" on the tab, not C.

I can top it. I had that mirrory silver and black JG sticker on my guitar case back in college, and one night while hanging out with my gal I looked at it and said, "you gotta love Marley." She looked at me all puzzled and somewhat appalled. I looked back at the sticker which had adorned my case for well over a year, shook my head, and realized it was Jerry. For some reason I initially thought it was BOB M and everytime I looked at it, that is what I saw. The gal moved on to someone who knew their stickers. Oh well.

There's one other problem with the lead tab post which is that if you do actually watch him, Jerry played it at the 4th fret position.

Makes his rhythm part simpler to pull off too.

I've also heard him do it plenty of times w/o the 5/7 hammeron, just starting on the 7th fret B.

Hey Waldo, shouldn't the 2nd 4 on the D be a 7 on the A? If not, I've been playin' it wrong for 20 plus years. Maybe it's a difference between the studio and live versions? Maybe I'm just plain wrong?
