This is serious. Recent independent research determined that 0.036% of Jerry's tone came from the correct cabinet handles.

My brother has done a few cabs lately...he used handles that look like what you posted YJ. He's pretty meticulous...he cut the hole for the handle and felt like the lip around the edge would be a pain if you were ever trying to slide the cabinet on that edge...so he routed the edge of the hole so the handle now sits flush. That's and extra pain in the butt...but in the end it looks great and was worth it. Just a thought.

in all realness thought, jerrys 2x12 tone was 0% from the handles cause his 2x12 didnt have handles,
hard truckers just added them so it would be easier for carrying but honestly if anything they make the tone worse

Hey Yankee Tim!

I got my handles, grill cloth and jack port at Speaker Builders Supply. Great folks to deal with. I couldn't be happier with the handles. Dead centre in the vertical axis and 4" +/- below the top of the cab. Perfect for moving this baby. The flat black is a sweet touch.

I used 4 coats of linseed oil with a light sanding in-between. In no time my cab got a natural relic from the many gigs its been to in the last year. I copped a HT plan off the internet. It had enough info to get the basic dimensions to something I was happy with. Not an exact reproduction of anything. I used 1/2" birch ply. Worked just fine. 3/4" would weigh a ton.

Do the handles effect tone.? Well if you have ears like a dolphin or dog, perhaps you could notice the effect standing behind the cab, but honestly, if you are after that amount of detail, well god help you on your tone quest!

I could not imagine handling this cab with the 2 JBL's without handles of some sort, and the one's I picked have been perfect for the ergonomics of handling gear.

Peace,

James

OMG - That was a wild guess...didn't expect a fact check! Only on RUKind.... LOL...actually I started out in marine biology at a college far from the ocean. Dropped out to be a ski bum in second year. Never actually studied any fish in first year, just really hard math, bio-physics and the plant and fungus kingdom...but I suppose I'll get fact checked on that too so I just checked...apparently its not polite to call dolphin's fish...they are mammals that make those funny clicking sounds, like they are playing space.

I spent the afternoon trying to determine if my handles effected my tone. Put the mic first on the lower speaker and then on the upper one where the handles are located. OMG the results floored me. If I get time I'll post a sound clip.

Peace

James

These handles I found Image go straight up inside the wood made of composite from a stereo store used in the subwoffer boxes. Easier on ure wrists cause all four fingers go up and grab a composte covered wall of the cab. 5 bucks a a pair and the dome protector($5 too what I call it) after a mic'd E120 few weeks back got dented in by some bozo hitting the mic. Those are now installed on all my K's and E's.

I may be missing something, but did the original Hard Trucker speaker cabinets have handles?

And it has been discussed before, Partial closing of the rear will have a factor on the cabinets frequency response whether it is 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4, with a completely closed back having the most bass response. It all has to do with how the air leaving the rear meets with the air coming out the front. A Speaker cone moves in both directions.
