jerry pedals

Postby austinhumphrey » Sun Jul 07, 2013 9:41 pm

im sure that somewhere on here there is a discussion about this but i thought i would open it up again. what kind of drive/ distortion pedals did jer use? it seems like there is just enough distortion to get the effect but his tone is always very light and clear. i tried a tube screamer to try to match it but it never sounds close to me. i saw something about him using a boss overdrive somewhere but im not sure how accurate that is and i have heard mixed responses as to the tone and quality of that pedal. what are all of you using? i was lookin at different mxr pedals, is that a good start? what are some other cool effects you like personally? this might be a good free for all pedal talk actually. let me know what you all are thinking.

The answer(s) to this question first require another question:

In regards to what distortion Jerry is using, What year do you have in mind?

Are you asking for replies to be specific and general at the same time? The years 70-74 you named were pretty much devoid of pedals other than a Wah, although I will swear that some kind of additional dirt or fuzz is present in China Doll during 73-74.

hit me with whatever, you all have already got me headed in a good direction. could 70- 74 be just an amp setting hooked up to a foot switch? you definitely hear some distortion those years. it's all over skull and roses which was 71 i think.

early years were overdriven amps, with additional gain coming from a Stratoblaster starting in early '72

+1 on natural amp distortion and and stratoblaster for pre 74. Around 78 I think, Jerry started using an MXR Distortion+ (script logo). He used that up for quite a while, but at some point started using a Boss distortion. Cant remember which one, all those yellow ones start to look the same after a while :D

Boss = OD1 - OD2-r and an occassional HM2. These were in th 80's and 90's Plus I believe the script distortion+ was still around

Then you've got pre-Mutron vs post-Mutron dirt. Let me know if this is accurate:

post-Mutron III
late 70's to '87: MXR Dist + ; '88-'95: OD-1

pre-Mutron III
starting in '79, a progression from DS-1 > Mxr Dist + Series 2000 > HM-2(brief) > OD-2

Has anyone nailed the debut date of the Distortion + yet? I still have never seen a photo of either of them on the floor, but you can hear it (and the Phase) in '77-'78... maybe '76 even? Good example is Comes A Time from 5/21/77- that has to a D+, no? There's the 12/31/78 photo where you can see the two Mutron pedals but not the MXR's, which to my knowledge first appear in a photo when the pedal rack debuts on 8/4/79. No time for hunting this stuff down like I used to...
