Hope Bobby's okay

Hope Bobby's okay

Postby playingdead » Fri Apr 26, 2013 4:01 am

By the second set last night Weir could barely stand up, actually fell over during Unbroken Chain ... band keeps PLAYING while the roadies picked him up, sat him in a chair, where he was pretty much about to fall off again. They finally took him off stage and the band finished the show without him.

Hope he's okay. Supposedly he hurt his shoulder working out and people are speculating he took some pain pills and then drank too much. But you would think they would stop playing when he actually went down.

He just about took John out and they didn't even miss a beat! They didn't even look that surprised when he was melting into a puddle in front of them...so it must've been something like a bit too much alc/pill combo.

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — A belligerent and incoherent Bobby Weir collapsed onstage at about 11 p.m. Thursday night during a Furthur concert at the Capitol Theatre and was assisted off-stage by crew members.

Police told me he was taken away in an ambulance and the Furthur Twitter feed and Website had no update on his medical condition as of 8 a.m. Friday.

Weir, 65, is the longtime rhythm guitarist of The Grateful Dead and the band Furthur was playing its ninth sold-out show in 12 days. His voice and guitar playing had been strong in the previous performances in the run.

“Hope he’s OK. I wish they would have pulled the breaks before it got to this point,” one fan wrote on ThePhilZone.com, a fan Website.

At about 11:10 p.m., the lights went on inside the 1,800-seat theatre and the show was briefly halted as crew members helped an incoherent Weir off-stage.

Some fans left the building, but Phil Lesh, Weir’s longtime Grateful Dead collaborator, opted to play on after a break.

“I mean, Phil almost stopped playing when his buddy took a dive onstage and buddy gets carried out by the audience,” another fan wrote on the site.

Lesh told the audience that Weir strained his shoulder in a workout and the band continued to play an encore set of “Stella Blue,” “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” without him.

At least one fan who left after Weir collapsed verbally lashed out in the front of the theatre that Lesh kept on playing despite the incident.

Weir appeared to limp out on stage to begin the night.

Standing to the left of the stage during an opening set that began with with “Feels Like a Stranger,” Weir appeared OK at first. But during a second set that included “Eyes of The World,” “Uncle John’s Band, “Scarlet Begonias” and “Unbroken Chain,” Weir could barely remember the words to several songs and was increasingly unable to stand up.

He nearly fell into the amps behind him at one point before tense crew members brought out a red folding chair and placed it in front of Weir as the band played on. Weir kicked the chair and continued to play guitar standing up. He then swayed to his left and fell down, stunning the audience.

With the help of crew members, he was assisted up and sat in a red folding chair before nearly falling over several times.

Eventually, after Weir began to play something on the guitar by himself, the crew unplugged his guitar. Lesh and bandmate John Kadlecek walked off stage, leaving Weir alone before he was escorted off by the crew.

The band is scheduled to play Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday.

Pretty fucked up that they just kept on playing. I'm really not sure about the priorities of this group.

I am so disappointed by the bands reaction. It was pathetic.

Hopefully we'll find out soon what is going on and I hope he is ok. To me it looks a lot like the effects of intoxication, which could explain the band and roadies reaction, if they knew he was in this state prior to getting on stage. Otherewise I really think they would have put him directly into an ambulance instead of into a chair and we would have seen a much different reaction. Don't give the band too much grief yet until we hear what's going on.

Old men sing about their dreams.
Women laugh and children scream,
And the band keeps playin' on.

On a serious note, this looks and feels bad. Mojo sent to Bob. I hope this is an aberration.

"Never mind how I stumble and fall"....agreed...the reaction from the band (or lack thereof) as the audience gasped was.....noteworthy.

what were they supposed to do? I guessing they knew what was up, were embarrassed/sick of it, etc. Trying to make the best of the shitty situation and not make it anymore of a scene than it was.

I don't blame Phil or JK in this situation , this is def not the first time Bob has done this with Furthur , I would have been pissed as hell at him. Even when friends show up to jam and they're half in the bag , I get irked . It's a complete lack of respect for all your bandmates and every audience member who bought a ticket. It's actually sad and pathetic at the same time , and I don't care if its Bob Weir or Howdy Doody. If he has that serious of a problem , then he needs professional help . I wish him all the best .

Bobs been given his all since 1965 ...
Give the man a break .... ask for refund if thats whats so important .....
To stand there ... while your " friend " is down and keep playing .... pathetic
Been in plenty of bands and know a wasted band mate is a drag .... does not excuse the response they had ...

My take is the fact that the band just kept playing suggests they knew exactly why Bob was incapacitated and, whatever else they might have been thinking, they were not concerned about his overall health or that it could be a serious if not fatal episode. And that, my friends, may be the saddest part of all.

I see this as PL and JK just trying to keep the wheels on the bus moving to prevent a COMPLETE train wreck. He hadnt even hit the deck and there were already two roadies right there . Was the whoke band supposed To just stop because Bobby was wasted again? I'm sure JK and Phil could both see the roadies at the ready to rush on stage at any moment and they obviously used thier best judgment in the moment. If there was just the band playing in an empty room and Bob collapsed , you can bet they would have acted immediately to help thier friend . Does anyone remember the vid of Bob too hammered at the Fox Theatre maybe? Phil about blew his stack at him for being so wasted on stage . I hardly think Bobs self induced episode makes anyone else in the band pathetic.

Srs, Bob is the man and I really dont hold this against him (who am I) but it would really suck if he weren't around because we just said that's Bob being Bob and no one held him accountable for his actions. Either way , I'm sure he ll be back laying some tasty licks in a just few days !
