To me theres only one scale, the chromatic one;)
But really I view everything as some variation of the maj scale. :Learn those 7 notes first. Those, along with the flat 3rd and 7th and you got most things covered. Even the flat 5, when your playing lead, is usually either a bent up 4th or just a chromatic passing note. Start with the chord tones, thts the important ones. Analize the makeup of every chord you know. Whats the root? Whats the 3rd, is it maj or minor? Whats the 7th(is it natural or dominant?) Now where is the 6th? Find that maj scale plus the b7, and the min scale off every chord position. Dorian is just a maj w a b3 and b7. Mixo is just a maj with a b7.
Then if you cant figure out what to do, play the melody! Sing the song and find that and other stuff will just happen. If you listen to Jerry a lot, the Jerryisms will start popping out on their own.
