There should be a foam disc in place between the vent on the rear of the speaker and the back of the dust cap. It most likely has dry rotted and is now small pieces and dust. It will sometimes cause unwanted noise and if it gets in the voice coil gap can do damage. But as I said you have nothing to loose by trying it. If it does not work or does not sound right let me know. We can recone it.
