One man's opinion, subject to change:

Weather Report Suite
Cassidy
Sugar Magnolia
Music Never Stopped
Mexicali Blues
Black Throated Wind
The Other One
Lost Sailor/St.
Throwin Stones
Greatest Story Ever Told

Hard to keep this one out, might bump one of the last two above: Jack Straw

Good point, Moses came riding up on a quasar is worthy of inclusion, so GSET bumps Victim or the Crime on my list. Bob has a lot of songs with interesting lyrics, not easy to settle on a top 10.

I've seen "The Other One" on many lists, and here, you've bumped Lazy Lightnin' for it.

In terms of performance and what the Dead did with The Other One, sure, it deserves a place. But in terms of song writing, The Other One, or at least the part that was commonly played and can be attributed to Weir is pretty basic stuff, especially when compared to a piece like Lazy Lightnin', wouldn't you agree? I was looking at my list in this light. For the same reason, to me, LLR > Playin',. Jack Straw, I always thought was a full band credit. As I stand correcte don that, it certainly deserves a place on the list, though I might be inclined to bump St of Circumstance instead of BTW.

It's kind of hard to argue that John Phillips actually wrote Me & My Uncle since he admittedly had no memory of doing so. Apparently it was written in a drunken group setting, much the same as the story of how Me & Bobby McGee was written. You could say he definitely gets the credit since he was the one getting royalties for it all those years but the song's origin is definitely shrouded in confusion. Judy Collins recorded it first, GD definitely made it their own by performing it 616 times, I've even heard a Dino Valente theory, I suppose because he was a patsy other people had stolen songs from?

1. Jack Straw
2. Picasso Moon
3. Throwing Stones
4. My Brother Esau
5. Heaven Help the Fool
6. Weather Report Suite
7. Victim or the Crime
8. Sugar Magnolia
9. The Other One
10.Lazy Lightnin'

I'd also like to give honorable mention to Bombs Away, Let It Grow, Hell In a Bucket, and Cassidy.

Changed this list a little bit 'cause I hadn't heard Weather Report when I first wrote it. Other than adding that and, regrettably, subtracting one, no difference that I can detect.
