Jerry Tele- Who Knew?

Very interesting. I just got this message from a connection on another music board- he's involved in the Dead archives project at UC Santa Cruz:

"I got to briefly strum one of those guitars (the last one? Rosebud?) when my friend and I set up a little MIDI studio for Jerry when he moved out of Mountain Girls house. He actually seem to play this beat up old Tele more than anything when we were around (1988-1990ish). Probably because it was light and a beater."

And I'll bet Jerry sounded "just exactly like Jerry" playing the old Tele.

Jerry's favorite middle single coil sounds like a Tele on it's neck pickup to my ears.

And Bobby sounds often like a Tele on it's bridge.

Roy Buchanan is a guilty obsession of mine, and God you can hear Jerry in his playing (or most likely vice versa)....

Hilarious! That picture is of MY Tele and MY slippers! I'm a huge Tele-phile and like to be comfortable when I jam so like 6 years ago, someone started a thread on The Gear Page where one person after another created Photoshopped shots of me wearing my slippers playing my Tele in strange scenarios or famous musicians w/my Tele or slippers. I'll post some more of the especially yuck-inducing shots here later tonight or tomorrow! :p

Jerry playing a tele!

Here Jerry is playing George Harrisons Custom Made Rosewood Tele (serial number 235594) played on the rooftop of the Beatles last concert. It was given to Delaney Bramlett by Harrison.

Man, David Nelson sure can play a dead on Jerry, although with him, who knows, maybe Jerry played a dead on David Nelson, those guys are like twin Jedi's of single coil guitar, who were both obviously intricately involved in each other's nascent musical development, and Nelson get's his tone from the Tele, of course, with a little help from the b bender. I hear his b bender is mostly stock mexican made, but can't be sure on that, probably could find out all about it on the telecaster guitar forum. I love listening to David and Barry conjure up the spirit of Jerry with their two very different rigs, but similar results.

I remember an early 70s interview where Jerry talked about playing a Tele a lot. It made me wonder if his tracks on Ace are with a Tele.
