Jerry Effects Pedals

Hi Ya'll,
Newbie question here, which effects pedals did Jerry use the most? Which were most important to his sound?
Is there a list pedals for songs played?
I'm not gonna run out and buy all 10 pedals he had, but if you were to get a couple, which ones would you start with?

I'd start with single coil pickups and a clean Fender tube amp! That's the bread and butter of the Jerry stuff. For OD/distortion I use a Boss DS-1, pre-Taiwan, found that for me it works best, but Jerry used a MXR dist+ and some other Boss overdrive pedals later on. Also, there has been lots of talk about the Earth Drive overdrive pedal, made by one of the members here. Enough people have said enough good things to convince me to add one to my chain in the near future. Really that's all ya need to get off on a good start: good single coils (strat) or split DiMarzio's, clean Fender amp with reverb (JBL's don't hurt either), and a little something for the dirt, as those Twins don't tend to break up at any sort of reasonable volume. Of course, if ya really want to get fancy, you can do the whole OBEL, McIntosh power amp, vintage Mutron, rackmount everything under a glass case, spaceship type rig. I'm not knocking it, I think it's a beautiful thing when I see a guitar players rig that looks like it can double as a time machine... It's just, I feel like some people could get discouraged when they see all that, thinking there's no way to do the Jerry thing on a budget, when really you can get some damn fine tone with a really simple rig!

I'll try to post something helpful.

If I were to get "just a couple" of pedals, they'd probably be the overdrive and the envelope filter. If even those two pedals have to fall within a tight budget, I'd probably try to find another Danelectro CTO-1 like the one I now use, and probably an EH Q-Tron, EH Mini Q-Tron or maybe the new MXR filter.

Now go poke around the threads because everything has been discussed multiple times.

First I would do a search in the equipment forum/jerry tone forum. There is TONS of info right there that has already been discussed and re-discussed, but I agree that an envelope filter and a distortion pedal will get the ball rolling.

+1 on the envelope .... By far the " funnest" pedal combo , IMHO , would be a qtron ( can be had for Real cheap) and a delay .... These two pedals are essential for jer stuff, and can provide hours of fun for the whole family !

For delay do not use the popular Boss DD3. I am going to get an MXR Carbon Copy which IMHO sounds way better than the Boss DD3.

I think Jerry used just the delay with the clean sounding guitar a lot.

Distortion before the Envelope Filter? is that true? I thought the filter ALWAYS went first.....

I'd say you have to get to the mid-80's before you really start to hear Garcia using a Delay effect much at all, outside of "Space".

my vote for two good ones to start with: Q-tron and either an old school Dist+ for some of that jer distortion or an SMS earth drive for emulating the pushed twin sound of the 60s. probably get more use out of a dist+ for distinctly jerry sounds, but i like the earth drive better overall. i tend to keep it on lowish settings the majority of the time i play, and it sounds good cranked up a bit when i need it.
