MXR phase 100 script vs box logo

I need some views on this. I am tempted to just dish out the extra 50-100 dollars and get a vintage script logo. is it worth it??? experiences???

It's worth it. Otherwise you will end up wanting to do the mods for script and spending almost the same and have to do the work too.

Just picked up 100 yesterday. My first phase shift. Very much like the crunchiness when the box is on. Great versatility. I honestly didn't know there was a script version. What is different?

The difference is complicated (to me) changes in the electronics when Dunlop bought the company. Do a google search. It is also discussed in detail on The Gear Page. The original owner of mxr has a company called Rochester Electronics, I believe, and is putting out some pedals under the brand name Whirlwind with his original electronics circuits too.

The new Dunlop versions have an unusually forward brightness to them. Same basic phase characteristic, but the pedal tone is different.

Yes Brad, your right about the early block logos. I'm not sure up to what year, though. The information is vague. I have a '79 block logo phase 100 and a new dunlop mxr reissue script logo phase 90. When I A/B them, the script logo phase 90 sounds "phasier" than the block logo phase 100. Not a direct comparison, but close.

Just a thought but is it possible the original phaser, when new, was also brighter and that the old ones we hear today just sound darker because they've aged? This theory would be shot if the old ones sound darker also on the original recordings but the reason I ask is the possible tape delays analogy. Today, almost all of the new digital delay builders darken up their delays in an effort to emulate the "old tape delays" but when you listen to the original '50's rockabilly recordings, you can hear instantly that originally when they were in perfect condition with new tape, those delays didn't sound dark or ratty whatsoever - they sounded bright and sharp and, I think, gorgeous (of course, caps and resistor, etc. would age differently from tape and capstans).

Jon S., It's probably a combination of what you are discribing and the fact that dunlop has made several changes to the circuits as far as types of components used. The brand new reissue mxr script logo phase 90 (if they are still putting them out) sounds very different than a brand new mxr phase 90. Big $ difference too.

The square logo 100 I just grabbed from CL sounds neither bright or dark. It seems to pass the tone transparently. The boost (slightly hotter) is noticeable though.

Quick signal chain question... Phase before or after reverb?
