They rent sometimes, more often they truck their own stuff around.

Example - say they're in the middle of a west-coast leg of a tour but fly East for a day to play Letterman or Leno. Gauranteed that most of the backline (aka Amps) will be rented.

No doubt in my mind they rent for TV shows like that. because Phil doesn't need his own Eden stack for that.

7 Walkers came to Jackson Wy for a make up show. I don't remember why the original show was postponed. It could have been while Papa Mali was sick. Any how. I worked for the airline. Those guys flew in. No amps came off that plane. No drums either. GPJ checked his bass thats all. Papa Mali carried his guitar on in a gig bag. The entire backline was sourced in Jackson Hole. I know.The Backline gets sourced all the time. In smaller communities like Jackson it isn't even rented. Its lent. The same kind of thing happened when Taj Mahal came to town. Same deal with Buddy Guy.

Does every musician want their own rig? I'd say so. At some point do the logistics force the venue to rent (or in some cases even borrow) gear. Yup.
