Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Unique or specially modified items will nearly always get trucked or flown, along with guitars, basses, and probably rugs some of the time. Keyboards and bass amps are often rented, sometimes drums and guitar amps too. Every city has at least one company with a warehouse full of gear, ready to rent.

It's just stuff, it doesn't make music by itself. Like Jahozer said, if they were in Philly the night before and Atlantic City the night after, it's probably gear that they own and trucked in. If they flew in from LA the night before and are heading to London the next night, they probably rented a lot of it.

This is true Rusty. I know a guy that works for a company that rents out backline equipment for the big shows
all over NYC. In fact he personally was part of the crew that set up Phil's wall of 4 Eden D410XLT's.

Actually ALOT of the shit you see on tour is "rented" in accordance to the rider. In many cases so and so's guitar tech will coordinate with a back line rental company when playing a fly date. PA is rented in the sense that the sound provider is a hired contractor who also most times then not work within a rider also. Same with lighting. Far as equipment they own at this point would fit in a small ryder truck. Equipment on tour has to perform so reliable that things such as dealership support and logistics become so much more important then owning vs. renting.
