As long as it's a really thick pick made of similar material, is there much of a difference? I have the Adamas and the 2mm Dunlop Gators and I find the tone coming out of the speakers and the electric played acoustically the same

Yep, there's a definite tonal difference. The Adamas have a much brigher, snappier attack.

The feel is mostly the same though, it's worth trying the Gators out as a cheap alternative. I use both on bass, depending on the era of tone I want and how the room sounds.
