Super II in bridge really needed? Is it ever used?

Seems like doing a Tiger build could offer more options to the player if they used a bridge pickup that gave a very different sound. Seems the bridge p/u is never used. Or am I way off base? Maybe a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB?

way off base, cumberland, mexicali and most of the country tunes are ALL bridge single coil.

And, having the Super II at the bridge also gives you some fine quacky Strat in-between sounds that don't happen as easily if you have a different pickup in that position -- my Walker has a Lollar Imperial at the bridge and while it quacks some, not quite as well as the Tiger with the matched Super IIs. Perfect for Mr. Charlie, Black Throated Wind ... and a host of other non-Dead stuff. Jerry used that in-between sound on "Someday Baby" to great effect, listen to the cut off the JGB "How Sweet it Is" live CD release. Check the sample excerpt on Amazon:

Super II or Dual Sound if you like Jerry's sound from '78 on. Maybe you prefer the 78-81 sounds. Go with the Dual Sound or Super Distortion (they're the same pickup).

With the Tiger Schem, how do you get the Middle/Bridge position Super-2's to run through a 250K tone-pot when in single coil mode?... or is running it through a 500K part of the Jerry tone thing?

I have one Tiger-style guitar w/2 Super 2's + a Super Distortion in the bridge slot and a second w/a Super 2 in the middle and a pair of Fralin Unbuckers in the bridge & neck slots. I prefer the variety/versatility of each. The Super Distortion bridge PUP split is particularly excellent sounding both alone and with the middle Super 2 split, I highly recommend trying it if you are not happy with the tone of a split bridge Super 2.

I have a regular Super Distortion in the bridge and I LOVE IT. I always thought the split humbucker in the bridge was too thin and brittle. I am sure I could dial the amp/boost/EQ, but that is against my religion while gigging. With the super Distortion I can flick and drive. It pushes a fender amp just right clipping wise. Also I didn't run a 5 way, I do off/on switches and get great quacks like Vic mentions with the bridge/neck too! Big River wouldn't be the same for me without a SuperD in the bridge running humbucker.

Pete B brought up something I've always been curious about - 500k for HB and 250k for single. I assume everybody with coil cuts uses 500k since I haven't seen a diagrams otherwise. If you had a super 2 without a switch (hard wired for single) would you still use a 500k pot?

I don't need to know, just want to know.... If Jerry did most of his stuff on single coil why not use value for a single coil... (yeah I know he had it (or it was) all set up for a reason) - just trying to learn...

that is a good question. Maybe its because it is still within a circuit of humbuckers?

It's because a 500k pot covers the range of a 250k pot but 250k cannot cover 500k!

If this is true then why do both the Neck single coil, and the Bridge humbucker, both connect to a 250K/500K ganged pot?
