I would be very interested if someone could build a mutron and then use say a HAZ to mount it in my rack. ala Jerry 90s rack. This might be a good place to start. I wouldnt mind chopping the HAZ. I also saw on jackofroses about a jig for this but its gone now.

The Neutron Filter is exactly like the MU3 circuit, but you will want to go with the hamamatsu P873-13 for your optoisolator similiar to the original.

When i was cloning MU3's i actually copied and etched my circuit boards from the Original MU3 Board and just used the parts list of the neutron filter. the cost of parts, labor hinder selling them as it is cheaper to just buy a q tron, or repair a defective MU3. But i got very close to the originals and use my clones exclusively now. I could hack up a HAZ and insert the circuit from them no problem.

Waldo I need to find a way to face mount the pedal in 4 rack spaces so it would mean using only the top part of the Haz and adding the on off button somewhere on there. It would then go to GCX and would be cool to have the power hardwired though not required. also on the Haz there is another circuit board under the button side of the pedal it is a +3 so dont know how that would efffect the chop but Im into it so let me know. thanks

i spoke too soon, i looked over my notes and there are some differences in the neutron parts list vs. the original mu3. mostly the ceramic caps, the .1uf is a mylar in the original. the neutron uses a .1uf Tantalum. if anyone has any questions drop me a pm and i'll help the best i can.

I just found out about the neutron at ggg. so an exact (or almost) clone of the mutron 3? cool, but man i do not get that wiring layout diagram! i understand theres a bunch of switches, but the drawing is something ive never seen before. anyone got any clues?

but waldo said in an earlier post after the cost of parts you might as well buy a Qtron. is the qtron that close in sound and design to a mutron 3? i know they were designed by the same guy. i have an old qtron and like it, but i was trying to get closer to jerry. I've been told i'm picky about filter pedals, as i hate all the new steel box electro harmonix tron's (well... i hate most of their new steel box pedals vs their old big box aluminum cousins that are supposed identical twins... pfft)

Anyways, should I try to get closer to jerry in other areas and keep my q tron? or build the neutron?

do you use the OBEL? if not, i think you might want to at least try that route first. it helps immensely with getting the correct dynamics out of envelope filters.

Yes! I was amazed at the improvement of tone of my Q-Tron+ the first time I used it with the OBEL and waldo`s tpc-1. But over time I found it was still lacking compared to JG`s fat and fartsy tones from 77-78. Then I swapped out my Super ll`s for Dual Sounds (or Super Distortions) and Holy Fark Fatman!!! I`m very very satisfied with the Q-tron now! I think the Dual Sounds are the key along with the OBEL and tpc-1. I`m glad I`m not going to have to drop 5 or 6 bills to buy an original and get it serviced!

how about the two circuits? are you saying the qtron is that close to the mutron circuit and sound?

from the amount of mutrons ive seen on this board and the price of those vintage pedals... are they seriously just after the enclosure... or maybe the buffer in the pedal?

To my ears the Dual Sounds are a hotter output and cut through a loud band much better. The high strings seem a little brighter and have a bite to them. The only minus is that the bass strings don`t seem to have the same character as the Super ll`s. Running it through a MXR Distortion+ sounds about the same to me.

Im using the new Mutron 3+, do you guys think it would make a bigger difference to use the obel, or get a Qtron. Im planning on putting a dual sound in soon either way.
