Anyone else amazed by the pictures that show that Garcia would let the cigarette he often had tucked into the headstock burn down and actually char his guitar...apparently he was committed to both his addiction and his art.

I think its cool that you noticed that. I looked at those pictures and didn't see it. Doesnt look like it hurt the guitar any to me, and I like that he wasnt concerned with such things. I've got a pretty nice acoustic guitar my wife bought me for christmas some time ago, and i will never sell it. If I want a new one someday ill buy one, no trade though. So when i ding my guitar or something it doent bother me any, it just adds character, another story the guitar will be able to tell down the road. sounds like the beginning of a song...

I could be wrong, but i thought that the burns were already there when he got the guitar.

Honestly it doesn't surprise me at all...seems very in-line with the way Jerry would be. I used to keep a cig going there as well...but I don't think I ever did it while I was smoking Camels...which I did for far too many years...no filter there to protect the guitar....been off them now for a lot of years but will never say I've Kicked the habit....it's one insidious addiction.
As for the burns already being there... I had no idea.

I was amazed at the char marks, but don't forget, Jerry did have his vices. Note the char pic is after Doug Irwin redid the headstock, with the eagle logo.

In his book Scully says Jer would fall asleep with a cig in hand and often had a char mark between two fingers. Y'ouch!

It looks like the TopHat had fine tuners on the tailpiece (like a TP-6 tailpiece). Nice. I loved those on my Les Paul.

not sure where they were taken, but do know they were taken after jerrys death, and iirc, were taken for a guitar magazine spread. the wolf and alligator body shots were already out there in a much lower quality.

I think the cigarette burns are undoubtedly Jerrys, because if you look at Tiger and Wolf they both have char marks. Notice how the gold lining on both headstocks turns black? And if you zoom in on tigers headstock you can see the burns.

All of SRVs strats have cig burns

I just noticed that one of pics (#16) is labeled "Tiger" but it clearly is a photo of Rosebud's controls and jacks.
