you're missing the end of the line, plus the alternate end to the line (the first time it ends 15 17 19, and the second time it ends 15 17 15)...but overall this is darn close to what everyone else has submitted.

The Aoxomoxoa version is different? You'll have to pardon me for not having heard any studio Dead in years...

fwiw, Spilly's is correct, with [f]'s completion of the ending.

For sure the Aoxomoxoa is different than say..the Europe 72 version (which is closer to most live versions from there on out).

The Europe 72 version has been my favorite for many years, and was THE song to get me into Jerry and the dead.

Here's the Aoxomoxoa version http://frazer.eddyizm.com/ccsf69.mp3
and
Here's the Europe 72 version for comparison http://frazer.eddyizm.com/ccsf72.mp3

These are both just clips of a couple times through the licks at the beginning of the song.

The Aoxomoxoa version is very close to spilly's version, and the Europe 72 version is very close to my version from the forums. And they are different. The Aoxomoxoa version has a "crammed" feel to it, like they had just finalized what Bob was going to play in the studio and he hadn't fleshed it out into something with some space and a cooler vibe. Where as the Europe 72 version has that fleshed out airiness to it that makes it much cooler, and is probably why it's so much closer to what Bob plays probably to this day.

Anyways, I may have helped beat a dead horse in this thread, but like I said before, China Cat is one of my favorite all time songs, so I'm into discussing it in minutiae.

Intro ad nauseum

Postby Billbbill » Sat Nov 18, 2006 5:49 pm

This was my take on this

E-----------------------------------------------------13
B---12-13p-12--------12h13-15-15---12-13p-12-----12s13--
G-12---------14-12-12-----------12----------14-12-------
D-------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

E----15h17-19-------
B-15----------------
G-------------------
D-------------------
A-------------------
E-------------------

E-----------------------------------------------------13
B---12-13p-12--------12h13-15-15---12-13p-12-----12s13--
G-12---------14-12-12-----------12----------14-12-------
D-------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

E----15h17-15-------
B-15----------------
G-------------------
D-------------------
A-------------------
E-------------------

Upon further review I've come around to the threads conventional view on the 3 note arpeggio over the F. On the other hand I still don't hear the B note of the G chord (the 16 on the G string). It certainly works, but I don't hear it on the live versions I've given a close listen to.

On the Downhill from Here vid you get a good look and Bob does simply move up two frets and keep the same fingering from the F to the G. I just can't hear him hitting the B note.

Anyway enough of that. Here's my newest take with that B in parentheses

E-------------------------------------------------------13
B---(12)-13p-12--------12h13-15-15---12-13p-12--------13--
G-(12)---------14-12-12-----------12----------14-12-14------
D-------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

E------15h17-19-------
B----15----------------
G-(16)------------------
D-------------------
A-------------------
E-------------------

E-------------------------------------------------------13
B---(12)-13p-12--------12h13-15-15---12-13p-12--------13--
G-(12)---------14-12-12-----------12----------14-12-14------
D-------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

E------15h17-15-------
B----15----------------
G-(16)-----------------
D-------------------
A-------------------
E-------------------

I'll do a vid to highlight these differences. Although I seem to be the only one thinkin' what I'm thinkin'.

Revised revision

Postby Billbbill » Sun Nov 19, 2006 7:57 am

I also noticed Bob (again the Downhill from Here version anyway) doesn't hit the 12's I now have in parentheses (should've used brackets in recognition of [f]'s fine video) at the beginning of each half phrase. It seems more and more he's in the kiss mode; keep it simple stupid. Oh well.

Just a quick disclaimer re a forthcoming vid for this. I errantly included [f]'s tab as an example of 2 notes at the beginning of each half phrase that are tough to do before the 13 to 12 pulloff on the b string. You'll understand when you see the vid. [f]'s tab only has one note. Sorry [f].
