E120s vs K120s

E120s vs K120s

Postby deadagainband76 » Fri Aug 19, 2011 2:53 pm

Any input on which speakers is the best option for good solid jerry tone in medium size venues. I have a solid state hafler p500 power amp with a groove tubes trio and also sms classic. Any opinions would be helpful. I have 2 of each of these speakers. What do you guys think?

Clearly the "E's". Then sell the "K's" to me....

The E's handle much more power without blowing. The K's are widely accepted as the sweeter sounding speaker with their alnico magnets.

Thanks guys, if they are reconed do you think they can handle more than the recommended dosage as far as watts goes. If I had 2 Es in one cab and 2Ks in another I was worried about them blowing because they are not rated for as much as the Es. But I have heard that they can handle a bit more being reconed properly because the original wattage rating also had alot to do with the materials such as adhesives etc they were made with. Does this sound like it could be possible?

I've had and used both and definitely like the E120's better for the 80's Jerry tone. It depends on what you think "sweeter" sounds like.

This will be the first guitar rig I run in stereo with two cabs containing two different speakers. Hopefully it works out.

I'm not comparing apples to apples here, but my K-110s have a "sweeter" tone than my E-120s did -- the E-120s sounded bright and harsh in comparison -- but in the mix, the K-110s sounded thin while the E-120s cut right through and sounded "right."

In other words, if you're playing in your living room, the K's sound great, but with a loud band the strident and brighter tone of the E-120 goes a long way.

+1 ... I have K110, E110, K120, and E120 speakers. The K series do, I think, have the sweeter bedroom tone (K110 in particular). But the first time I took an 120 to a gig, there was a point in the night where I was surprised (and shocked) as it sliced right through the band and indeed sounded just exactly perfect.

Thanks for the info guys. I was gonna have the K's in the top cabinet and the E's in the bottom cab. So I think ill have the E's run through the board and the K's more directional more at head level for more of a personal monitor. Either way its something to look forward. My little obsession I guess.

I also have a K120 in the top and an E120 in the bottom (of a verticle 2x12 cab).
With a stereo power amp you can balance the volumes of both, and hear one or the other, or both.
Nice.

Yeah pete, that was my plan. The only difference being two speakers in each cab, but the idea is the same. Cool, more crap for me to lug around.

One day I will walk into what has become my music room, once the family office, and sit down....Plug in after letting the tubes bleed a bit and be happy. Its a good feeling when you know a Hard Truckers Cabinet is in route! My rig is getting closer and closer every day. 1/2 E120s, 1/2 K120s. My own little wall o sound!!!!

I didn't want to start a new topic, but why does it seem everyone likes and uses K120's so much more, if Jerry used E-120's? I'm picking my E-120 tomorrow in reading, and after all the talk about K's I don't know if I'm regretting it.

E-120s sound awesome if they're broken in (loosened up). I just bought a pair that were not as broken in as the pair I'm used to and they sound a little tighter and brighter (not as good). You got to play them a while at loud volumes.
