Allman Brothers Scale?

Does anyone know what scale Duane uses? Besides the blues, I mean the major sounding scale.

well i dont know if there is one definitive scale, but for say, mountain jam, go with e mixolydian. on at filmore east, duane makes a mistake on mt jam, then goes into some middle eastern scale. pretty cool.

I was working on Blue Sky the other day and I believe that was a mostly Major Pentatonic.

Of course he doesnt stay in one scale all the time.

I've been working on Liz Reed recently Dicky takes the first solo and its A dorian. Havent quite got to Duane's solo yet so I cant comment to his as of yet

Amazing, that's one of my favorite songs from them, I have that song on [Deluxe] Eat A Peach Elizabeth Reed is also a good one, to the guy downstairs.

duane uses dorian a lot. i think he goes modal more often than using pentatonic or blues

Oh yes, Miles Davis admired Duane solos because of the use of the modes in them

I Use a scale that I just sortof figured out fit. I'm sure it has a name, it'd be great if someone knew. I'll write it out for ya in e-major. The scale is some sort of fusion between major and pentatonic.

That would be a mixolydian scale, which is an A scale (A B C# D E F# G#) centered around the E.
The major E scale would have the D# rather than a D natural.

I came up with a mnemonic for the modes

I Did Pee a Lot, Mix A Lot

Ionian (major)
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian

And no the sentence doesn't make a lot of sense, but it works.

I love it! May I appropriate it for my students?

Of course, I tend not to think of them in that order, but in a shifting order that goes something like Lydian, Ionian, Dorian, Mixo, Aolian, Phrygian, Locrian, and also Phrygian major (used for the dominant of minor chords). In fact, I tend to think of chords a lot more than scales. To me, an F in an A minor scale is a b13 and not a 6th.

They'll add the 4th to the pentatonic in Blue Sky and there's a nice little descending riff that has a 7th (D#) but mostly pentatonic. I usually play most of their major key stuff with the pentatonic plus the 4th.

A major scale with no 7th has sometimes been refered to as "the Allman Bros Scale" FWIW..works very well with Blue Sky and Mt. jam

back in high school (the seventies) I briefly took lessons from an older blues guy. He had me jamm some and stopped me asking about the scale. I was clueless... but apparently around the 7th... I was using a derivation that he found interesting and wrote down. I was listening to a ton of duane. Had not thought about that since... until just now reading this thread ; )
