A P bass is a Fender Precision bass, one pickup. The Fender Jazz bass -- J bass -- has two.

Exactly.

John Kahn in the 70's was most often found with a Precision bass, P bass for short.

The other type of "standard" Fender bass is the Jazz bass, J bass for short.
