Tone control issue.

Tone control issue.

Postby ac4468 » Sun Jan 19, 2014 9:16 am

All my Wolf wiring is completed and everything seems to be functioning as it should however the 500k tone pot for the middle HB seems to have it's entire range from about 0-3. At 3 it's at full brightness. Wiring schematic is same as Waldo's Wolf schematic. I honestly can;t recall it being that way from the start but as I corrected a few other issues I noticed it. Any ideas? The only deviation from the schematic was reversing the two wires on the volume pot (not the ground). This seemed to correct a large volume difference between the OBEL on and off.

Is it a linear or audio taper pot?
All's well that sounds well.

Check out the Jerry quotes in this thread.

Thanks Waldo. That one quote explained soooo much!. I am assuming that the stacked pots for the Bridge and neck were intended to behave differently since i have a fairly linear change in tone over the entire rotation of the knob. Related to the fact that they are 250k/250K???

Just a guess, but I think the dual 250k was just leftover from when wolf had single coils.

What I love about this project and just the process in general is that the pursuit of duplicating his sound and equipment exactly often contradicts everything that you may know to be correct. All of the research you have done is fantastic but no amount of research can figure out what went through his mind, Irwins mind or any of the other guys that had there hands on the guitar over the years. Some things may have just been done out of convenience or circumstance. I've spent several days wondering what I did wrong only to find out that it just worked for him and was intended. Love it!

And I thought I'd read every Jerry Tone thread on this board...multiple times. And I have no recollection of those details. Great stuff. Tried it on the Tigerized Strat with the MXR Dist + for the first time with that in mind. I knew about the Mu. Crazy.

That tone sweep has been bugging me for quite some time. I found in working on Pete B's guitar the last time, that the more accurate the cap (it seems) the more limited the sweep.

Glad I didn't fix it in my guitar. it seems there are always trade offs. Which in itself is fascinating.
