Need some help on equipment to get my desired tone

Postby Gratefullydreaming » Tue May 09, 2017 2:42 pm

Hey guys, big Bobby fan here. I'm a fairly intermediate player who started playing 2 years back, learned on an acoustic so my knowledge of going loud is quite limited. I've started to get more into playing loud after I realized the Bobby voicings are so much easier on electric. I have learned a fair amount of his play style and his use of the cage system and have implemented it into my playing where I find myself staying away from the first positions. I have a G&L legacy, and an Ibanez ARC300 plugged into a Line 6 spider IV amp. I can scratch the surface of his nice clean tone that I like when I use my Ibanez and mess with the phaser setting on my amp but I am always messing with it to see what sounds best. Could anyone hear give me some tips on what I can do next to further my desired tone? Even some basic tips on amp settings would be appriciative. I would also like to know what things I could buy and install to get closer to the tone... I know I could get a middle pickup or a pedal would give me more but I just need someone to help steer me in the right direction.... I love bobby's tone in 77 on Terrapin, estimated, and LLR along with many other years. Thanks !!

First thing I would buy is a Roland JC77 amp.
If you have a guitar with H/S/H pickup configuration. swap out the pickups to DiMarzio 36 anniversary PAFs neck and Bridge and an Area 61 middle pickup. That alone will put you in a very good place.

I don't have a hb/s/hb ... Only hbs then a 3 single coil.. Would it be cheaper to have one installed or buy a new guitar

The tone quest you are on...is never ending one. Glad to hear you are going the bobby way . I would go to the Fender Blackface Twin setting on the amp and from there you should be able to come up with some nice tones. At this stage of your quest you should be learning the Bobby licks and style. A lot of this Tone comes from the way he plays. I have been a Bobby player since 1990 and i like his 1972 tone and his 1977 tones. here are some clips for you of my Bobby playing and tone. PM me if you need more info.

Ditto on the Dimarzio's. The guitar ace7277 is playing is just 2 HB's Both Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF's, no middle pickup.

Ha ha...I think you got your Ace's confused. Yes I have other vid clips of me doing the Bobby parts. PM me and I will send you my email. I can put some in Drop Box for . And to the Ace that's in the Bobby tribute band and playing with Stella, what are you using for effects. I like your tone. This is from Ace7277 Brendan Connolly, I'm the Bobby in The Dog Star a NYC Dead Tribute band.

Hey Ace, I think we have a mutual friend. My band in the 90's was Bears Choice out of NYC and LI, With Josh Dolgin playing lead guitar ( very good Jerry), I got reunited with him in Dec 2015 and we formed The Dog Star.... Is that a Twin you are playing and how did you find the JBL 15 that you are using.
