My Hoeg's

The electronics layout of the Blacknife looks very similar to the Ibanez Artist (AR-500). I've heard many things about them but am still a bit confused. Does the guitar basically have a built in Tube Screamer circuit?

The AR500 has a 3-band EQ with cut/boost controls for low/mid/high, plus an overall gain control. Boosting the gain control can overdrive the signal.

In terms of circuitry. it differs from a tube screamer, however, it can yield similar results.

It's very useful at shaping tone, and having it built into the guitar is very convenient.

Thanks. :-)

So is the circuitry in this Blacknife the same one as the AR500?

Only the EQ/pre-amp, although Dozin should confirm.

The pickups and pickup switching options are totally different than the AR500.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but since your asked, there were three versions of the AR500. The first version was closest to Weir's guitars and is very hard to find as they are quite rare. I just happen to have one for sale:

Beautiful guitar! I hate the term "Swiss Army knife of tone", but I suppose this one is. Looks like endless possibilities. Enjoy it. :-)

Not even close to a Swiss Army knife. Late 70's all the way.

I was lucky enough to have seen both of these guitars in person and they are phenomenal!

Beautiful guitars! That cocobolo blackknife cowboy is too cool.
Pickup question: that middle position DP410 2.2 is a stacked dual coil, right? Do you guys have that pickup wired in series?
Anybody have a line on these now discontinued pickups?

Thanks -- phil

Middle pup is single coil only.

Thanks. The middle pickup is 4 conductor and I have it wired for phase reversal with a dpdt switch.

What replaced the DP410 2.2 is the Area 61 http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/strat/hum-canceling-strat/area-61

Interesting, so it's a two wire pickup?
The Dimarzio suggested replacement for the DP410 2.2 pickup is the Area 61, and that is a stacked coil pickup. The current new Virtual Vintage line are stacked coil hum cancelling also. I wish they still carried these pickups, but they're all discontinued.

So Dozin it sounds like you've got a two coil pickup (4 wires = two coils, right?). MK you've got a single coil version?
When you say phase reversal doesn't that mean the switch puts the pickup out of phase with the other pickups? Or are you putting the coils in your middle pickup out of phase with each other?
