Treble 10 bass 0. When did it start?

Treble 10 bass 0. When did it start?

Postby Trecia » Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:01 pm

Any info on this? I found myself wondering this a while back, and the thread on the Alligator timeline and tone changes during that era piqued curiosity even more. It seems like in the late 60s and most of 70 he could bottom out a twin with bass flub during particularly heavy jamming. I wonder if the 10/0 setting was a trick picked up from the pedal steel world/NRPS. Seems like it must be pretty well set by 72. So, some point late 70 early 71? Also curious if anyone remembers JG talking about this particular element of his setup?

I'm especially curious about this question because this approach has never worked out for me. I think it might be because of my aggressive picking. Wayyyyyy too thin sounding. Anyone else?

I run my '71 twin almost exactly like Jerry:

Volume: 6
Treble: 10
Mid: 5.5
Bass: 0

This gives me the closest Jerry sound.... Maybe it's the amp w/ mods thru the Mac that makes these settings viable?

I cant have the bass on Zero - guitar just sounds too harsh

We did a show once and the sound guy said " your sound is too bright Im gonna fix it in the mix "

Not sure if that was a good thing or not

I think part of the prob my be my guitar , though

Thinking about putting heavier gauge strings on the G and B strings ....

TJ,
I have an MC250 and a MossVale 962.
Based on my own side by side testing, to approximate the MC250 treble response on the 962 using the Jerry Twin settings (10, 5.5, 0), start with the presence control on the 962 fully counterclockwise (off), and basically no higher than 10 o'clock.
I personally bring the Bass knob on the Twin pre up from 0 to where I just barely hear it it start to affect the tone, like 2.5.
FYI,
Pete

Here is a shot of Jer with NRPS from 7o.
Can anyone get the settings off the Twin?

My best guess:

Volume - 7.5
Treble - 10
Middle - 8.5
Bass - 4
Reverb - 0
Speed - 0
Intensity - 0

Bright switch appears to be in the up position.

Flag on the play...
I just noticed that that amp is a Pro Reverb.

Yeah fwiw it would be hard for me to believe that the Bass on 0 thing came from Pedal Steel.
Can anybody get the settings from this pic?

I haven't had a problem with 10, 4.5-5.5, 0 setting with my SMS->MC2100->Beyma Liberty 2x12 (Hogan cab). The MosValve is a little edgy and my stock Twin reissue I have to drop the treble to around 8 and set the bass at 2-3.
