Voo Doo's!!!

Postby Searing75 » Sat Dec 21, 2013 9:12 pm

Just ordered a set of Voodoo 69's. Gonna' throw them in my Wolf copy with a CAE CB 1. I really want that '78 Wolf tone. Anyone think changing to a stratoblaster instead of the CB1 would make a big diff?
All's well that sounds well.

Might want to do a search here on Wolf 2.0 about the pickups. As for the preamp, Jerry's Wolf was known to use the blaster.

Congrats! David Allen makes some of the best pickups around, and his customer service is great. The Voodoo 69's absolutely NAIL the early to mid 70's Jerry Alligator/Wolf tones. I've got a set in my #1 strat and wouldn't switch them out for anything. My Tele also sports DAllens: a Hot Vintage tele pup in the bridge and an Alley Cat (PAF type) humbucker in the neck. Killer tone all the way around. He recently came out with a set of humbuckers called Double Standard, basically a humbucker made out of two full Strat single coils, I'd love to try em out.

:D :D :D

What did you mean by doing a search Waldo? Are you implying that the Voodoo's are not the single coils I should use to get that late '77-'78 tone out of my Wolf??

I am going to install a blaster in it, along with my CB1, and switch between them. One may stick?

I think he means that you may not want single coils for the tone you're after. By '78 he went to the Dual Sounds in the middle and bridge and used the neck single very sparingly.

You can go either way during that era, singles or dual. It transitioned pretty quickly. Wolf 2.0 had singles coils. The general consensus is they were Fender style, something like Fender custom shop '69's or DAllen voodoo 69's will get it. There is also a pic posted here, not too long ago, when Jerry had Dimarzio SDS-1's in Wolf. Dual sounds showed up in Wolf 2.2 in late '78. So, there are a lot of options etc.
Anyway, I think Waldo might be referring to this and the fact that this has been discusses a lot and there is tones of discussion and info here if ya use the search.
Also, Waldo's web site has a fantastic timeline of all the specifics concerning Wolf and Jerry's other main guitars as well! That's where I got some of the information I stated above!

Congrats on the VooDoos. Love em. Whether or not they are correct for 78 Wolf is debatable, but they sound great in my guitar. Best vintage style single coils I've used, period. :hail:

Thanks all! I am fully aware (due to Waldo's site) what was in Wolf in that period. My favorite tone ever is that early 78, where he had the single coils with the blaster. The Voodoo's will get me there I believe.

I currently have a Super distortion in the bridge and the middle. Had a super II in the middle, but wanted a beefier tone. Also, a SDS-1 in the neck. It sounds amazing!! I am just game for a fun change, so I am dropping the Voodoo's in her (that sounded funny). :P

Hey hippie guy, I recently moved out to western NY from Albany. Are you in Saratoga? My old band, October Circle played up there for years. Where are you located?

I just ordered another set of voodoo69's for this Wolf-caster I put together a few months ago. It has Fender CS69's middle and neck and Dimarzio true velvet in the bridge now. The true velvet is ok, but the CS69's don't have the same growel as the voodoo69's to my ears.
